There’s not much documentation on this feature and I’m curious what to expect, how it would be managed, etc.

I’m not gonna lie, after several months of unreliable email service with Dreamhost, I had to migrate all my domains’ email addresses to other services (mostly Zoho). I’ve become interested in managing one on a cloud server with AWS but figured before I dig into that I would find out more about this feature.

Can anyone shed some light on this option?

I found managing email quite complex between spam, abuse, security, reliability… After some experiments many years ago, I gave up  I still manage some servers but email is so crucial to me that I don’t trust myself with it…

That said, things have evolved since the last time I tried setting up a mail server. There are interesting projects out there that simplify lots of tasks. One that seems quite interesting is Mail-in-a-box “Mail-in-a-Box lets you become your own mail service provider in a few easy steps. It’s sort of like making your own gmail, but one you control from top to bottom.”

If you decide to experiment with it, consider writing a tutorial to get free DreamHost cloud resources (up to $100 per month): has all the details.
