Imap and smtp server setting

if i setup an email client, is it necessary for me to use
smtp.dreamhost.com/imap.dreamhost.com as my outgoing and incoming servers?
Can i use my own domain for the server names (hosted with DH), for example
smtp.mydomain.com/imap.mydomain.com?
Will it still work?

The names smtp/imap.mydomain.com are not automatically defined. There are two options:

  • Use mail.mydomain.com for SMTP/IMAP, because it resolves to the IP address of smtp/imap.dreamhost.com. The one downside is that DH might one day split SMTP/IMAP to different IPs.
  • Define DNS CNAME records to map smtp/imap.mydomain.com to smtp/imap.dreamhost.com.

CNAME records can be defined in the domain DNS tab of the domain dashboard:
