I'm almost certain I've posted here before, but

I’m having a problem with my website. I’ve done a tiny amount of webpage research before and I’ve found that if you upload a file called “index.htm” or “index.html” through FTP your web browser will automatically be directed to it.

As helpful as Dreamhost has been, I’ve had no content on my website for a month now and I am a paying customer… >.>

All my website has on the front page is a favicon and “[Enter code here]”. How can I get the website to display my HTML file?

You have to actually upload the file and rename it index.html; just creating a new file with webFTP and calling it index.html will result in “[Enter code here]” because that’s what your index file has right now.

Very little to do with either emus or farmers!

Thanks! I knew it would be something pretty simple.

Actually, wait up: It’s not displaying the code, it’s displaying the text. My site is literally…

"gamerunknown

". That's what I imported from freewebs. >_>;

http://gamerunknown.com looks to me as though the file does not have the proper file type, so it is being served as “text” instead of HTML.

The file should be named “index.html” - if you have a typo in that, or it is not names with and .html or .htm extension, then the server is likely to serve it as plain text, which is what looks like is happening, to me.

EDIT: Actually, I went and looked again at your page. - it is an .html file, but unfortunately it was “borked” by MS Word. Browse to your page and view the source code, and you will see what I mean. DO NOT use MS Word to create web pages - I guarantee you that, one way or another you will have trouble.

Either use a decent html editor (there are many free ones out there - I like NVU) or just a text editor, but not MS Word. In this case, MS Word has placed your “code” into the html file as “contents” - probably because you used the “html filter”. If you absolutly must use MS Word, enter your .html code and “Save As” .txt - then upload the file.

EDIT: Oops - this was entered in response to a post that the user deleted while I was answering - sorry if it makes not sense now…the answer below is for this post:
http://www.gamerunknown.com/index.html

It’s correct. =o. I think it could be a problem with the code?..Or perhaps I uploaded it as .htm and changed the file name to .html. I’ll try doing .htm. =]…Still doesn’t work as…http://www.gamerunknown.com/index.htm =(
As I said in my earlier edit - the files are named appropriately, the problem is that MS Word had munged your html code.

Save the MS Word containing your html code file (not the current file, as MS Word has already “borked” it up) by using “Save As”, and select “text” (.txt) as the type of file.

Then rename the resulting file to index.html, and upload it - it should then work.

After that - DO NOT USE HS WORD for writing html code.

Thank you very much =D

Sorry about the post thing, I didn’t notice that you had to press preview after continue so it took ages to continue. Haven’t been concentrating because I’ve been sick. Even though I find it hard to just use HTML to get a website running, I don’t like object based stuff… So I’ve refused to use FrontPage. It uploaded index.html fine and since I had to pay for it (Office), I may as well use it =P.

I imported the file from freewebs, now I just need to work on making the site I had in mind. I’ll probably try and learn some javascript or CSS, since I found out a little about them already. Learning from scratch is pretty hard though… I could really use something like w3schools. Hmm… I think I’ll try getting some friends to help with design and scripting. Well, I suppose if I really get stuck with that, I’ll make a new thread ;D. You’d make a good greeter.

My sister needs to go on now though, so I’ll just try and make the links and an outline of my plans a little later. Once again, thanks matey.

Okay, I’ve hit another problem. I saved a HTML file in preperation for uploading it when the site was up, but now it will only display it as actual words ( even when I copy it to frontpage… =(

Got any tips?

The tip here is the same as it was before: Get yourself a decent editor, and write your html in that; from looking at your site I can see that you have managed to get some pages created that display “correctly” using Frontpage:

http://www.gamerunknown.com/index.htm
http://www.gamerunknown.com/drawing.htm
http://www.gamerunknown.com/Vent.htm

 • look at those pages for examples as to how to get them to display (though, again, I strongly advise against using Frontpage :frowning: ).

p.s. You have managed to “break” the publicly displayable thread (I think by deleting a post above where these are in the thread).

If you wish to continue this discussion, please create a new thread.
