.htaccess propagation

Is there anyway to make an .htaccess file apply only to it’s containing directory?

I want to stop indexing of certain file types in a directory but not for any of its subdirectories.

.htaccess files affect the directory in which they are placed, and all directories beneath them in the directory tree.

You can affect the characteristics of indexing for a subdirectory beneath a directory with an .htacess file in it by placing another (different instructions) .htaccess file in that subdirectory.
