How to send 503

greetings folks. i was wondering how one would go about sending a 503 when you do maintenance and you dont want the whole world seeing your changes go about. do i need to make a special page or can i send a generic 503?

nice. but unless i misread that basicly tells you how to set up the error pages for when the server generates the error. but what i want to do is use htaccess to generate the error. example. lets say im upgrading joomla and want to take the site offline. how would i go about sending the 503 code with say a “retry in 1 hour” message. while i upload the new files.
