How to 'protect' a directory

design

#1

My sites contain a lot of graphics (photos, drawings, etc) that are basically in a /pics/whatever.jpg format.

How can I keep folks from accessing the /pics/ directory?

And, do I really need to? Folks can right click and save an image so why protect the directory? Is there any harm in not protecting it?

Either put a blank index.html file in the directory, or put an .htaccess file with the single line:

Options -indexes

(this is documented in the kbase at https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/index.cgi?area=2517)
