How to preview website

#1

I am transferring a website from another server, and would like to preview it before I change DNS settings. Is there a “backdoor” address I can use to see what a web page looks like before I go live?

Read and inwardly-digest this wiki article.

Okay I did all that. It says it will take several hours to activate. I’m not sure why that is - all I want to do is preview html files on DH.

It usually only takes a few minutes to do the subdomain thing.

…and takes even less than a few minutes to do the “other” suggested thing

Okay I may have to try that. It’s been more than several minutes and I’m still getting “Server not found”. I also tried creating a new fully hosted subdomain (without mirroring), test0606.dreamhosters.com - and I also get “Server not found” on that one too. Maybe something is wrong with the server (?). The test0606.dreamhosters.com folder was created - and I even uploaded an index.html - so it’s not like there nothing in the folder.

Patience is a virtue at BH, I guess…

"I am very sorry for the delay with the setup of this website. Our
DreamHosters.com domain has so many sub-domains that a reconfiguration
can take a very long time, sometimes. This seems to be the case here,
so
please allow more time for this to be completely setup.

I apologize for the inconvenience!

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thanks,
Patrick M"

AH! Well, that explains a little…still might be able to get at your main site with the “hosts” trick though  .
