how do i upload files that can be viewable using http? like www.mydomain.com/dir

second, how do i customize my mainpage…

like www.mydomain.com instead of showing the directory how do i customize that?

thanks

use FTP, passive mode.

All files need to be in the subdirectory thats the same as your domain name. Forexample if your domain name is mynewdomain.com then when you start up FTP look for the /mynewdomain.com directory, and put the files there. If you want to access them by www.mynewdomain.com/dir then create a new directory in the /mynewdomain.com/ directory and put them there.

You need an index.html or index.php file in your /mynewdomain.com/ directory to prevent the index list from coming up. (make sure they are ALL LOWER CASE).

It’s a setting in what ever FTP client you use.

I wish it was more http based rather than ftp based. I have no idea how to upload files to my domain so I or ANYONE can download them… whenever I upload to ftp or do anything in FTP for that matter it changes NOTHING when i go to http://mydomain.com

#9

That means you are not uplodaing them to the right location.

Create an index.html file.

ftp to your site. Change into the /mydomain.com/ directory. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)

Upload the index.html file.

go to http://mydomain.com/

When you creat a web site, in html normally, you create a set of files like index.htm (or html there is no difference) and link.htm, and etc… once you have created thoes files by using a program like frontpage or dreamweaver, or a text editor, or any other program - you have to get thoes files onto the the server that is hosting your website so it can give the files out to people who visit your website.

Generally the easiest way to get thoes files onto the server is by FTP, enless the program you used to create them has a way to upload your flies. If you are going to use an FTP program don’t worry about any of thoes settings, almost allways any FTP program for windows has defult settings that will work for you.

Now, if your domain name has just been registered, or you have updated the record relating to your doamin name, like changing the name servers with in the last 24 hours it may not have taken efect across the internet yet. It can take up to 36 hours for such changes to take effect.

There is nothing wrong with having dashes. it doesn’t make a difference.

Hope this helps!

Without more information I’m not sure what else to tell ya.

Telnet to your account. CD into the mydomain.com directory, and do a ls (make sure you dont include your username/password/etc, but makesure you include from the "cd " command to the end of the ls command), post the output here. along with your domain name.

Hi, maybe this will help.

If you do not have a stand alone FTP program, or don’t feel comfortable using one, you can upload files through the Dreamhost control panel:

Log into the Dreamhost control panel
Go to Domains > Web
Select [GO] next to the domain you want to add an index page to (under the column that says FTP).
(If you do not see your domain, then it has not been activated and that would explain why nothing shows up).
Log into your domain with your username and password (whatever user “owns” the domain).

Meanwhile, make an index.html page using Notepad or any simple text editor that looks like this (you can just copy and paste this code):

Test Page Testing this domain

Save it as plain text: index.html

Drag it into the folder that says “yourdomainname.com” (whatever your domain is).

Go to http://www.yourdomainname.com
If the page comes up, you’ll know that your domain is up and has propagated and is ready to add files to.

If you still do not see anything, then something is not configured correctly.

Sorry if this is too fundamental, I can’t tell by your posts if you just don’t understand the concept of putting pages on the web or you do, but something is not working. A test page will at least let you know that your domain is up and working.

And do please read the Kbase info also.
Good luck.

so i uploaded an index.html with nothing in it before (yes all lower case) and nothing changed. So then i just made a new index.html and put what you said to put in it. Nothing changed… i just installed wordpress to see if everything was working okay. Everything works fine there. I can get into my FTP and upload a file. My domain is http://matt-leahy.com Nothing ever shows up but that directory, and I have no idea how to access that directory. When i went into my FTP via ftp://matt-leahy.com using CuteFTP I can upload things and download things just fine. So I uploaded a directory inside ftp://matt-leahy.com called /matt-leahy.com (I believe thats waht you told me to do.) I put index.html in there. I Also put one in the main directory. Nothing changes. I still see my parent directory when I go to my URL.
