How do I Set Up a CNAME?

#1

I’ve just set up jasonalveyphotography.com, with the intention of pointing it at my dphoto.com gallery. The instructions on dphoto say to ask you ‘how do I set up a CNAME record to point to www.dphoto.com?’

So how do I do it?

Thanks for any help anyone can bring and apologies for my lack of technical prowess!

You can manage it via DH panel --> Domains --> Manage Domains --> Dns

Thanks very much, but here’s the next problem:

“You already have a record for this name. You can’t have a CNAME and any other record on the same name.”

I’m not sure what to do now…

Save yourself some stress. The best way to do what you want is to do a 301 redirect. Create a file called .htaccess and place it in the main directory of jasonalveyphotography.com with the following information:

301 redirect / http://www.dphoto.com

That will automatically forward anyone who tries to go to the other domain to the right place and also tells search engines it is a permanent move. I have to ask though, why get a second domain name just to point it to somewhere else? So long as you just promote dphoto.com you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Its not like you will get any benefit in having two domains like that. You are just wasting your money really. Redirection should only be done if you had one domain name FIRST where all of your content was and then you decided you wanted to use a different domain name better suited to what you are doing. It allows you to send visitors to the new domain and have the search engines update the information to the new domain without losing any pagerank.

I think hes trying to point to his page or gallery at dphoto not the site in general… and have his domain name displayed in the URL. The site looks to be an online photo gallery, a blogspot sort of thing…but for photos.[hr]
i believe this thread and this thread http://discussion.dreamhost.com/thread-130131.html are similar in nature…
