How do I restart apache?

#1

I’m relatively unix-savvy. What’s the canonical DH way of restarting apache? Can I just do a:

/dh/apache2/apache2-ps15318/apache2-ps15318-httpd -DModSSL

Do I need to do this as root? I’m just asking so that the next time apache goes down on my VPS I can just restart it myself instead of waiting for support to do it for me.

Thanks!

You can always reboot the entire server from the panel. I’m not a VPS user, so that’s all I’ve got.

If someone in Support were to restart Apache on your VPS, they would simply type:

(The “2” is a throwback to an era where we would sometimes have both Apache 1.3 and 2.0 on installed the same machine; their init scripts were respectively “httpd” and “httpd2”.)

/etc/init.d/httpd2 restart

this used to restart and I wrote it down in my notes. But today I tried it and would not restart. Got a bunch of permission denied messages. Then I tried to use web panel to restart my VPS and now apache can’t see any of my files. Just the default It works! page.
