Hosting in China?

#1

Has anyone hosting from inside of China, had problems with access being blocked or slow speeds? The small business I work for in China wants to put up a webpage mostly for use by Chinese people, but are looking for a reliable host.

Are you talking about sites who have users in China and are you asking about general connectivity issues or specific issues regarding sites or content blocked by the government there?

There is at least some interesting reading, links to which I’ll post in non-linked form in case the content would lead to this board being blocked:

na/appendix-tech.html

Please note the asterisk which has to be replaced with an “i”.

So apparently at least at the time of the study, 2003, blocking sites based in IP addresses was common. Since we have a shared environment here at DreamHost, your site could be blocked on the basis of sharing an IP address with a site that did contain banned content. The prudent, though perhaps paranoid, thing to do would be to host on a unique IP address, avoiding this problem altogether.

Hopefully you’ll hear from a bunch of people hosting from China soon. It’s morning there so you should get some replies “overnight” if you’re in the US.

Thanks Lensman for the links! Yes, I am talking about sites who have users in China, in fact the majority of the visitors to our site would be Chinese from within the country. I was talking about general connectivity issues, especially access speeds.

You will always have much higher latency with hosting outside of china so that will slow things down a bit (but not usually horribly). If you want you can test your speed here:

http://www.dhspeedtest.com

This is hosted off of a regular shared server at DH (from my shared hosting account) so it should give you a pretty real-world example of speed (as far as bandwidth throughput is concerned).

Try us. We have reliable hosting out in Hong Kong and China. http://www.vicosys.com.hk/ We are out of Hong Kong and have excellent connectivity going into China.

What should be under the DH logo?

I can only see a red-cross icon.

I’m in China and have the same plan and concern as COH1 does.

You mean on houkouonchi’s speed test site? It’s a java applet so you’ll need to download a java runtime environment in order to run it.

Yup it is a Java applet which requires Microsoft’s or Sun’s JavaVM to run. It is so common that people has this these days i don’t even think about it but maybe I should mention that whenever I give someone that URL.
