Help with migrating email

#1

Hi. My email and website is hosted at Dreamhost, but on a friend’s server. He told me that he will unlock my DNS record and “change the MX records for the domain to point to wherever you migrate”, but I need help moving the messages & inbox. Unfortunately we had a falling out, and he won’t inform me how to do this.

I don’t know what steps I would need to take to move my inbox and messages. I assume I have to purchase an account with Dreamhost, and then migrate.

Can someone please help me figure out how to migrate my email messages/inbox from a friend’s Dreamhost server/account to my own?

Thanks,

James

Assuming you want to keep the same domain, you need his permission to move the domain from his account to your own.

If you are using a different domain name - can’t you just use pop to download all your mail and save it, then start using your new domain name?

Hi theMezz,

I’m going to keep the domain name, and I could get his permission to move the domain from his account to my own.

I’m trying to figure out a way to move the inbox+messages instead of simply downloading the mail locally. In other words, when I click into my email, which will now be hosted under my own Dreamhost account, I would like my old messages to show up.

My friend says he will not help me with “mailbox migration”. He said: “I will unlock your DNS record on 3/23 (or a closer date if you’d like) and change the MX records for the domain to point wherever you migrate, but I’m not moving messages+inboxes.”

Do your or anyone else know how to migrate messages+inboxes?

To download your emails from the existing server, look for options here:

I dunno about uploading back to Dreamhost. You might need to maintain your archive separately from a new email server. Given that history is usually full of thousands of old and unnecessary items, this could be a great opportunity to get a fresh start.

Hi Starbuck,

I did go ahead and download via IMAP using Thunderbird. So I have the offline backup. It’s just that I believe there is a process to migrate the existing inbox over to a new domain, but I don’t know how to do it.

So now… Google for Upload IMAP?

Technically speaking, uploading old inbox to a new account can be done with IMAP? (examples I found with Google: https://superuser.com/questions/517751/is-it-possible-to-upload-that-email-back-to-the-server AND http://www.jamesg.net/?p=803). If that’s the case, then I should be able to go that route…

Thanks for feedback btw.
