General Drupal Performance Advice

#1

Hey all,

I have a drupal site up which is currently blocked with an http password, so no one is using it but me and it seems pretty slow. Any general suggestions on how I setup caching and so on so it’s as Dreamhost friendly as possible?

I have noticed problems with extra web security, so I turned that off and I’m not sure about fast cgi (I assume leaving it off is best, because then drupal can use mod_php, right?).

As for my Drupal settings, my caching mode is normal, and I have Javascript and CSS optimization turned on as well as block caching. What should I do for page compression? it says “By default, Drupal compresses the pages it caches in order to save bandwidth and improve download times. This option should be disabled when using a webserver that performs compression.” How do I know about that?

Any other suggestions? I assume my bottleneck is Mysql because my server load is pretty reasonable and my other sites load pretty fast. Anything I can do about that?

Other suggestions?

Thanks!

I definitely tried clearing the cache. I’ll give optimizing the tables a try, thanks.

I am running drupal 6, latest. I am experimenting with a few different modules – one of those might be the problem, of course, but I’d like to at least know I’m not messing up with some of the base settings.
