Ftp upload performance

#1

All my ftp users are on gap. Download speed is fine but I have never had upload over 5K. I was attempting to use Dreamhost for backing up data but it takes hours to upload a few meg.

Anyone have advice? Can I request a different ftp server?

Thanks,
Chris

Please read our Terms of Service - this isn’t an acceptable use of your web hosting account.

This has nothing to do with the problems you’re having, of course. But I figured I’d point it out now rather than later.

The 50 Gigs would be on the backup server; not Gap, which is most likely a web server. And it’s only for one user account.

Backups might have been the wrong term. I keep my digital images on DH but not in an album application. More of a “central repository”.

i don’t know why you’re having a problem uploading files. i get around 60-100KB/s usually. true, it isn’t maxing out my upload capability but its sufficient for anything i need to do in a relatively timely manner. i have noticed though that it can take FOREVER if i am uploading a lot of small files for some reason.

Are you on gap?

You can always use command line from the shell on Gap and FTP to your website. Not ‘localhost’ as that bypasses the network interface. But it’ll be an internal test to show you if it’s the server or the network between your home and the server. As a benchmark, you can create a Backups User which will be on another server.
