Setting up an FTP account was confusing to me on DH. On my current web host, I use anonymous FTP directory for collaborators to drop off or pickup data sets that might be too big to send as a email attachment. I was hoping in lieu of needing a “Strictly Business” account to get an anonymous FTP, I could enable FTP with a distinct user id and password in a “Sweet Dreams”. My account summary told me had only used one. But it took me a long time to figure out how to enable an FTP on the panel. I kept looking through every tab in “Home” and “Billing” and “Domains”. Finally I found a helpful forums discussion of FTP, and realized that the DH approach is that they’re users with limited permissions, and they’re set up under the “Users” tab.
OK, I have a FTP user set up and have been able to set it up as a “Network Place” on an XP PC. But I can’t figure out why my Solaris box can’t get the account and password right. I am using the -n option of FTP so it will ignore my .netrc file and not log me in as my main DH account. But this is what I see:
pahto% ftp -n kiki.dreamhost.com
Connected to kiki.dreamhost.com.
220 ProFTPD 1.2.5rc1 Server (DreamHost FTP) [kiki.dreamhost.com]
ftp> account ykfpftp
502 ACCT command not implemented.
Am I missing something on my FTP or is it DH’s kiki’s FTP?
