Form submitting

software development

I use Dreamweaver 4 for web design. It has a ‘form’ option where you can develop your survey, poll, etc.

The ‘help’ says that I need a CGI script to tabulate the results and I have searched for one but can’t seem to find what I need. Most are for polls and not surveys (allowing for open ended questions). Other than writing my own (picture me freaking), is there a canned one already available? All I need is for something to tabulate it all up when the user hits the SUBMIT button.

Yes, there are many many many around. What exactly are you trying to do? Can you give me a URL with a sample form?

If it’s just a straightforward form then I’d advise you to take advantage of Dreamhost’s Formail service which is preety simple to use and comes with some instructions here:

Hope this helps.

The form in text version can be found here:

Problem is, its a non-Dreamhost site. I can make the form in Dreamweaver but how do I tally the results?

If you just want the results sent to an email address then Formail (link above) would do exactly that! Are you looking for other functionality, perhaps?

No, I can tabulate it myself, its not a big deal.

I am trying now to figure out the formmail.

So basically, someone fills out the form on the website then when they hit ‘submit’, the information is then sent to me. I can then also set it up so that when it is sent, they are then presented a webpage that says stuff like ‘thanks, we needed that’. Right?

If I use Dreamweaver to do the form, I then use the syntax in the formmail that directs it?

Remember Wil, I am a blonde! I appreciate your help and advice tho.

I also am working with “EventHandler” but I don’t know if Access will want to pay for the program. Its either the program or me and I am free!

Hey Wil! I used FormMail to make this survey: http://holyroller.org/access/survey.htm

But when I tried to do the same thing at the Access website, I got an error message about a referer? I think its because the Access website is not on Dreamhost (http://access-wnc.org)

Hi Holy

Hey! Don’t knock blondes - I’m also one

The reason that you’re getting that is (yup you are right!) your site is not hosted on Dreamhost.

You can either:

… get this website moved onto Dreamhost pronto

… host the form on your dreamhost website (as you’re doing now) and direct people to the form on your website from the access-wnc.org website - most people won’t notice the diferent URL. If they do, then you can do some clever tricks with frames.

… install your own local copy of FormMail onto the access-wnc.org if they support CGI scripts. It’s not really difficult. I’m sure I and others will be more than happy to help you if you get stuck.

Sad to say, the Board doesn’t want to move it. I wish they would since the administrator panel with the other host is pert near useless.

Keeping the survey on my site is a good option, altho some of the board members are cautious to do do sue to my ‘alternative lifestyle’ comments on my site. :-0

How do I install a copy of FormMail? Where is it? I will poke around and see if I can find it. I am also working with Matt’s FormMail script. Just trying to figure out the installation stuff.

Ugh. You shouldn’t use Matt’s one. I hope Dreamhost aren’t either. A number of ISPs are making the switch to the alternative available:

http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/

Basically these are setup exactly the same as Matt’s so they can be dropped in as replacements but they are a hundred times more secure. There should be good documentation with them. If not - give us a shout with any specific errors.

Hi Wil -

We use a heavily patched version of Matt’s old formmail script for our own formmail implementation. We originally installed it a long time ago (before we knew better!), but have since solidified it some against various potential vulnerabilities.

I usually write my own form submission code, so I haven’t personally used nms-cgi, but we’ve been recommending it to a lot of our customers (we get complaint of at least one ‘abused’ formmail script a week, usually 2 or more).

Jeff, how come DH’s formmail script won’t work on SSL, at least not on one of our client’s sites, specifically secure.marinepartman.com . Larry got mad enough about it that he threatened to change hosts, but, since FW, my other half, works for him and runs his in-house network, writes his data processing software and monitors his sites, Larry listened to us instead of leaping to another hosting provider. To work around the problem we wound up using the BNB form, hacking it to write the CC info to server, not send out via sendmail over the net. (I hope that form script is okay, btw. FW will not be pleased to have to rewrite another script to write to server, then change all the .bat files.

Hey Jeff

Yeah, I figured that you were using a very customized version of FormMail. The default version would only accept forms from a given set of domains, and I didn’t think that you were adding domains to it as they got added so I figured something was going on

jeff is actually wrong though - we’re currently using the nms-cgi script and not a patched version of matt’s script.

That’s comforting to know, Will!
