Failure to send email


Using POP3, we have been seeing “failed to connect to server [email server address]” at random times for a couple of our accounts.

Has anyone seen this? Is it a DH problem or could it be in our LAN? It’s been hard to troubleshoot the LAN because the problem is intermittent.



If you have command line at your location, you can:
telnet [email server address] 110

This will connect to Port 110 (POP). You can also do this by logging into your DreamHost shell account and try the telnet 110 trick.

Oh yeah, no, I haven’t seen this.



Thanks but I think the problem is with SMTP, not POP. My bad. Sorry.


Fine, then:
telnet 25

It’ll give you a connect prompt where you can at least see if SMTP alive.
