Dropbox on DreamHost Shared Server

#1

Hi there,

I’ve been attempting to install the headless Dropbox client (https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx) on my shared server, and I continue to run into some sort of permissions error. And I can’t seem to figure out where I’m going wrong. I’ve had it set up and working before, so I’m pretty sure I’m attempting to do something that is possible.

Once I install and initiate Dropbox, I receive this error message: Couldn’t start Dropbox. This is usually because of a permissions error.

And digging into the error log, there is this: IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: ‘/proc/vmstat’

I have been unable to find anything on the web. I can’t believe I’m the only person to ever have tried installing Dropbox on DreamHost. There must be some people out there who have done this successfully. Thanks

G

I’m pretty sure you can’t run that kind of thing under shared hosting. https://www.dreamhost.com/legal/acceptable-use-policy/ at the bottom it says no daemons

Hmmm. Yes, that does seem to be the case. Well, I guess I’ve outgrown DreamHost shared hosting. Time to move on. Thanks.

Yeah, you won’t be able to install dropbox in anything but a server where you have root access, I believe. What do you need Dropbox on a remote server for? Have you considered installing an alternative like nextCloud/ownCloud? Once connected to DreamObjects, nextCloud becomes quite a good substitute.

I have installed OwnCloud on a VPS and can confirm: it works pretty well. Plus, you still own your data.

I hadn’t heard of a headless Dropbox client, but I guess it’s like any other Dropbox client: It keeps a local copy of your files (on your Linux machine).

I also use ownCloud on VPS. While it’s a tempting substitution for Dropbox, I have a terabyte account on Dropbox for personal use.
