Dreamhost is hosting child porn

#1

I’m not going to post the link here, but it’s definitely on Dreamhost. Reports to abuse@dreamhost made more than 24 hours ago have gone unanswered. From the automated response of the abusebot:

  • Concerns About Site Content

Concerns over the specific content of a DreamHost hosted site should be
referred to the site’s operator. As a part of our commitment to free
speech and expression, DreamHost does not censor the content of its
hosted sites beyond the removal of illegal content and protecting the
security and integrity of shared network/server resources.

Reported via PM to “Lensman,” apparently an admininistrative user here who was online at the time I sent the alert.

Lensman isn’t an admin here; he’s a user like most of the rest of us.

In past cases of CP, law enforcement gets involved and sets the timeline for removal of content. Once DreamHost and law enforcement complete the preliminary investigation, the site is shut down and enforcement enters the next phase.

So you know, the forum here is almost entirely made up of customers and to the best of my knowledge, Lensman is just a customer like the rest of us (and me!). As you say you’ve emailed abuse already, then you can rest assured that you’ve done your part to help get this problem taken care of.

Although I obviously can’t say for sure what’s going on, Dreamhost employees have explained some of their policies related to child porn here on the forum before. Basically, the lack of response from abuse doesn’t necessarily mean that Dreamhost is ignoring you; indeed, the company’s record has been that they take child porn reports very seriously. Dreamhost does work with law enforcement on such issues and it may be that law enforcement has told them to keep the content available for a period of time while they investigate. You’ve probably seen this page already, but here is a brief official FAQ regarding Dreamhost’s policies related to child porn.

From one customer to another, thanks for doing your part to knock that slime off the 'net.

Huh? I didn’t receive a PM, nor am I an administrator, for that matter.

Who did you send the PM to? You really should make sure to send it to the right people so action can be taken. One thing to remember that since Dreamhost’s facilities are in the State of California, legal action can be taken (I think) against the site owners. Frankly, I think that’s really the most important aspect of cases like this. A simple site takedown will only result in the content being hosted elsewhere, but if it can be proved that the site owners knowingly and willfully hosted criminally illegal content, then they can be prosecuted in the State of California - a far more satisfying solution for everyone, I think you’ll agree.

Well, I feel kind of silly now. I had a draft PM in progress and then chucked it when I couldn’t be sure of the esteemed Mr. Lensman’s status as an administrator. But that was late at night and I forgot that I had aborted the PM. My apologies.

What I am certain of is that Dreamhost is hosting a really nasty child porn site, that they have been notified, and that the site is still up. I sincerely hope that they are working with law enforcement to take down anyone associated with it.

DH will shut the site down as they promised in TOS.

We have reported to the police and have done our part. I believe the policeman need to follow certain procedures to send the thief to jail. Let’s see how fast this can be done.

you should submit a support Ticket under “Other” - > Security - > Security/Abuse

I think that would be a fairly good way of reporting it and you get updated if someone reads it.
