Subject: Moved account #444444444 to sabretooth!–account named hiden

Hey sunny!

This is just a note to let you know that we’ve moved your account to a new server!
We apologize for the lack of notice, but this was an emergency move as a perfomance
and stability measure.

What does this mean to you? Hopefully nothing! PLEASE READ THIS FULL MESSAGE though,
as it may help you fix any problems that come up as a result of the move.

Listed below is a list of the more common problems we’re seeing after customers
are moved to their new server. Please make sure you’ve made the relevant changes
below before contacting DreamHost support to investigate it further for you:

DOMAINS:

If a website isn’t working, please make sure you don’t have anything like
"/home/.SOMETHING/username" in any of your sites scripts. Instead, it should
just be “/home/username”. If your site brings up an error with something
between /home/ and /username/, then the path in one of your site files is
incorrect and will need to be updated. If you don’t know how to do this,
please contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you with it.

If you run your own DNS outside of DreamHost (i.e. your domains nameservers
aren’t pointing to us) we can’t make all the necessary changes for you, so
you will need to make these changes yourself. You will have new DNS records
for your domain, mail and MySQL services and can find all of the new records
on the ‘Manage Domains’ section of your panel. Just click the ‘DNS’ link under
your new domain to see your new DNS records that you need to update. You can use
these new values to make the appropriate changes where you’re managing your DNS.

Also, custom PHP (and php.ini) setups will likely be broken by the move. This is
because they would have been built against the old 32bit libraries on the old server
and not the 64bit libraries on this new server. Unfortunately, this isn’t something we
can help you troubleshoot, but you’ll just basically need to rebuild your custom php
(or php.ini) again.

EMAIL:

If an email address isn’t working, please make sure you’re logging in with the FULL
EMAIL ADDRESS as your username (and not something like m########). Also make sure you’re
using mail.yourdomain.com for your mail servers, and not anything with "dreamhost.com"
in it! For webmail, you’ll need to use http://WEBmail.yourdomain.com.

If you had an email .procmail (filtering) or .forward (forwarding) file that isn’t working,
you should be able to easily fix that up just using our web panel’s “Mail” section! Just
go to the ‘Email Filters’ sub-section and setup a new filter to 'Forward mail to a shell account".

FTP:

If you are using your server name (server.dreamhost.com) as your FTP hostname, be sure
to change that to your domain name (domain.com). The domain name will always point to
the correct server in the event that it is changed again in the future. If for some
reason you can’t use your domain name, you can find the name of your new server under
the ‘Manage Account’ section of your web panel.

That’s it really… and again, we really apologize for the abrupt nature of this move!
To try and make up for it a bit, we’ve also set your account to now have unlimited disk and bandwidth, forever!

Thanks!

Subject: Your new DreamHost PS MySQL is ready!----I got the private mysql server,

Happy Day!

We just finished provisioning your new DreamHost Private Server MySQL:

psmysql10625

Congratulations, she’s currently got 2300 MB of memory!

Why so high? Well, in order to make sure it’s enough, we now automatically
give everybody tons to start out with, and the first week of your PS is
FREE!

After a day or two, check your actual usage from

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.usage

And then adjust your memory to the correct amount. If you forget to,
don’t worry, we’ll set it for you at the end of the week so you don’t
get charged something crazy!

Sometimes, if you’ve set your levels WAY too low, you’ll need to reboot
your private server (it’s super-quick) before resetting your memory:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.reboot

Any new databases you create from now on will be put on psmysql10625.

We’ve also gone ahead and scheduled a merge of all your existing
databases over to your new MySQL PS. The process will occur
automatically at midnight (Pacific time). Although the process should
be seamless and requires no interaction from you, there will be a
brief period of database downtime during the merge.

If you’d like to cancel the merging, please just visit our Manage
MySQL panel at:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.mysql

There’s nothing more for you to do, and you still access your databases
via the hostname(s) you’ve previously set up. You honestly don’t need
to know “psmysql10625” at all, but we thought it’d be nice to tell you.

Please contact us if you have any questions or problems at all!

Thanks,
The Happy DreamHost PS MySQL Team!

P.S. Remember, in a week you will be charged for whatever level you’ve
set your PS MySQL to then. (But you get a 20% discount if you also have
DreamHost PS for your hosting!)

Sadly, I had to disable them both by putting a ‘deny from all’ in the

I’m very sorry for the problems you’ve been having with your
services. I’m one of the support managers here at DreamHost and I just
wanted to let you know what we’re doing to resolve this issue. It looks
like the CPU usage on this server has steadily increased, due to
customers adding new users and more resource intensive scripts since we
stopped running moves to this server. We’re currently in the process of
offloading a bunch of accounts on to another server to help reduce the
amount of resource usage on this server. It looks like your account was
actually one of the ones moved to a new server. As for the PS, we’re
running low on PS server space now, so these migrations are a little
delayed. It should be completed shortly though. We thank you for your
patience. If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to

I did some checking on this for you and it looks like your PS server is
currently processing so much that it is taking up the whole of the memory
you currently have allocated. Currently I went ahead and closed out the
processes that were taking up your memory and restarted the apache
process. This has brought your website back up for the time being but
you’ll need to take steps to optimize your scripts and your PS server. I
especially recommend enabling xcache and fastcgi on your domains.

Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble here! I took a look at your
server and it seems like you’re running into memory issues. All of your
sites are spawning lots of php5.cgi processes that are causing your PS to
run out of memory. When that happens, your sites will experience problems
like the Internal Server Error you mentioned above. What you’ll need to
do is take some time to read our wiki article on PS Optimization here:

After you read through that article, feel free to email me back with any
questions you have. If you take the steps mentioned in that article, it
should help reduce the overall memory usage of your sites and you should
start experiencing fewer errors.

If you have more questions or need help with something else, don’t

please see the attached bandwidth picture, and You guy will understand my decision.

Hey Sunny,
the sites are all down now.

what’s the exact reason???
Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble here! Unfortunately, the reason
why your sites are having problems is due to the fact that you are
hosting over 40 domains on your PS and have the memory allocated at the
minimum possible amount – 150MB. A PS requires about 100MB to function
before taking your websites into account at all. As such, your current
configuration leaves approximately 50MB for all of your sites to function
in. An average apache process uses about 10MB of memory and PHP processes
use about the same. If any of your sites get decent traffic, it wouldn’t
be uncommon to have over 150 apache processes running – or trying to
run. If you look in the Private Servers -> Manage Resources area of your
web panel you’ll see that your site is regular using above 1000MB of
memory and spiking to over 2000MB of memory depending on traffic.

I highly recommend you read through the following article as it
explains how memory usage works on a PS a little more and will help you
optimize it to function better with your load. That said, with the number
of sites you have, you should expect to have to set your memory
allocation fairly high to keep everything running well.

If you have more questions or need help with something else, don’t
hesitate to email me back! You can reach me directly at
joelw@dreamhost.com.

I’m sorry if you have had a bad experience using our PS add-on services.
I’ve contacted an admin and we are canceling your PS mySQL add-on
service. The databases will transfer over tonight at midnight back to a
shared mySQL server.–they allow to transfer the mysql server to the share server.

However, as far as you PS web server goes you’re using far too much
resources in order to be moved back to our shared hosting environment!
Reviewing your resource utilization graphs it looks like you may have
been having problems because you did not allocate enough resources in
order to meet the demand which was causing errors for your visitors.

Looks like you need to allocate more RAM to your DreamHost PS. That
should do the trick! See this Wiki article for more information…

I’ve increased the resource allocation to 535MB/MHz which looks like it
should be sufficient to meet the current demand and afterwords I was able
to access your site without any problems.

If you want to be moved back to our shared hosting environment you’d need
to reduce your resource utilization USAGE to approximately 200MB/MHz.----one page website with several hundred visitor, still not under the limits.
Once you’ve done that we can reevaluate things and see if we can move you
back. But we can’t move you back before then because it would not be fair
to our other shared hosting customers who would be negatively impacted by
the high usage of your domains.

If you require further assistance please let us know.

Thanks!
David J

Sad Day!

We just finished removing you from your DreamHost PS MySQL:

psmysql10625

You’re now on the regular shared DreamHost MySQL Server:

swordfish:aerts

We’re sorry it didn’t work out. You can always try it again
in the future by returning to:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.provision

We haven’t actually moved your existing databases yet… they are
scheduled to get moved at midnight Pacific time (Monday-Thursday).

If that timing isn’t good for you, please go cancel the merge from:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.mysql

Keep in mind though, in five days $vs_name will be DESTROYED, so you
MUST MOVE YOUR EXISTING DATABASES BEFORE THEN!

You won’t be charged anything more for your DreamHost PS MySQL effective
immediately however!

Thanks,
The Happy DreamHost PS Team!

I am very sorry that the PS server is not meeting your needs, but please
understand that we cannot move your account back to a shared server while
your resource usage (RAM) is this high. Such usage is beyond what we can
allow on a shared server.

If you want to return to a private server, you will need to show usage of
much less RAM than is indicated here. Once you have arranged for this RAM

Alrighty, I’ll be more than happy to assist you in the process of moving
back to shared hosting, but we’re first going to need to attend to your
current usage on the DreamHost PS:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.usage

I can see that you set your slider to 535MHZ/MB, which is great, but
we’re going to need it a bit lower! We actually need your usage to be
below this limit, as moving a heavy usage customer back to a shared
hosting environment can be detrimental to the shared server. Here is the
current usage on your VPS guest, which you can see is still a bit high
for shared hosting:

Mem (total/used/free): 535mb / 532mb / 2mb

Our goal for shared hosting users is to have a constant memory usage of
roughly 150MB-250MB. Though your usage is definitely on the right path,
we ask that you lower the resource requirements by reducing your load in
whatever way plausible. You may find the following article helpful in
this endeavor:

On a side note, I’ve also forwarded your support request over to a
support manager for further review. Please feel free to drop me a line
if you have any questions in the meantime:

I did not read every page but I read most of your messages.

From what I see, your site is using too much resources. Did you develop the site by yourself? I’ll suggest you to optimize your query and scripts. I’m sure some script is slowing down everything.

Run command “top” frequently to check which script is using too much memory. If you use plugins, make sure it is stable in performance.

For your case, it is not a matter of having the site hosted in shared server or private server. If you switch back to shared server, I believe the case will become worse.

Hope that helps.

I took the time to read that entire post. I’m wondering just what your site had on it. I don’t blame DH for hassling you about your usage before taking you back down. They probably want to see a functioning website that is using under the required amount before they even consider moving you back to shared hosting. Deleting files or redirecting to another domain means nothing. Once you are back on shared hosting you would just reupload and do the same thing. I don’t think their PS nor shared services would be something you would need. You should look into colocation or getting a dedicated server somewhere. It is more expensive but nobody wants a resource hog on shared services. It only takes one person to screw up stability for everybody else.
