Domain WhoIs info and smtp help required

#1

I just started using dreamhost to start a website, and I’m completely new to all this web stuff.

The first problem I’m having is the information people get through whois searches. I updated my information through dreamhost consol twice a couple hours ago, and when I check it on http://www.whois.sc/ it is still not correct. Is this because it takes more than the around 5 hours I have waited, or because my information is not getting updated properly. Also, what is the correct way to update the information?

My other question regards the mail accounts on my site. I was not really sure if there was any way to use these through dreamhost, so I tried setting one up on Microsoft Outlook. By just doing the default stuff (entering mail.sitename and stmp.sitename) I have been able to correctly view my mail, but it gets rejected when I try to send mail. What do I need to do to get this working correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m not sure, but I’d give it a day or so. The next thing I’d recommend is contacting them. Their address is info@nameintelligence.com.

As for mail, as I understand from the instructions, you use mail.sitename.com for both the receiving (POP or IMAP) and sending (SMTP) info. If you still can’t send mail, it might be that your ISP blocks Port 25. Mine does, so I can’t use mail.mydomain.com, either. If you know your ISP’s smtp server, then you just change it to that. If not, look on their site or contact them.

Thanks for the response, the mail.sitename was correct, but it seems that I too have the port problem too. I’m not sure what you mean by using the ISP’s smtp server, I want to mail from an account on my domain, not from a comcast account. Does anyone know how I can send mail from a dreamhost e-mail address? Is there some sort of client for dreamhost that I can use to send/receive mail? Otherwise, how can I get it? Thanks

PS: The WhoIs problem is still occurring.

You won’t be sending from your Comcast account; it’ll still go from your DreamHost account, just using the Comcast server. See https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/index.cgi?area=1623&keyword=send email.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to add, you can also use webmail, although I haven’t looked at it to know the finer points, but I’m sure it’s the same as most other webmail accounts. Just type in http://webmail.yourdomain.com/.

Thank you! I got mail to work through Comcasts server. Now I just need to figure out why WhoIs info is still not working.

If your ISP is blocking port 25, try port 587 for outogin E-mail. Many ISP don’t block that and dreamhost supports it. That way you can use dreamhost for mail instead of your comcast or whatever.
