Domain Mapping

#1

Hey there,

I have my domain with yahoo and would like to point the domain to my subdomain that I set up with dream host.

What are the steps for doing this?

Do i just change the CNAME record and Name Servers??

Anyone know??

If it’s your main domain, why not fully host it over here? You won’t be able to set up your host over here to respond to a CNAME.

because I was stupid and bought the domain like 3 days ago and can’t transfer it for 60 days!!!

So what’s the solution?

Set it up via your Panel, transfer your current files over, then change the NAMESERVERS to point at DreamHost.

ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com ns3.dreamhost.com Propagation usually takes a couple of hours.

You only need to have the NAMESERVERS point at DreamHost.

Once that’s done, start setting up your websites as “Fully Hosted” from Panel.

what if I have 40 websites with dreamhost? How is the domain supposed to find the right site??

So basically I have mydomain.com with yahoo and

I have build a site on dreamhost on a subdomain that I have with dreamhost.

I would like mydomain.com(yahoo) to map to sub.domain.com (dreamhost)

I have over 40 sites with dreamhost

If the domain is using DreamHost’s nameservers, every [sub].domain.com browser request will ask DreamHost where the subdomain’s files are. You only have to worry about NAMESERVERS for the main domain.

If you’ve already setup a site using a sub.domain.com address here you can Fully Host your domain.com and copy the files from sub.domain.com into the new domain.com folder. An aternative is to setup forwarding or mirroring from within Panel.

  1. Login to the DreamHost Web Panel
  2. Go to Domains -> Manage Domains
  3. Click on Add New Domain / Sub-domain
  4. Scroll down to the “Mirrored” section
  5. For “Create the mirror at:” type in mydomain.com
  6. For " Mirror this site:" select sub.domain.com
  7. Click on “Mirror this domain”

What will happen is that DreamHost will consider mydomain.com to be an alternate hostname. This means the web site can be reached at http://sub.domain.com/ or http://mydomain.com/

Once DNS lookups resolve to your IP address at DreamHost, web browser will tell the DreamHost computer that they want the web site named ‘mydomain.com’ or ‘sub.domain.com’ depending on the URL. Example:

URL: http://mydomain.com/somefile

becomes

GET /somefile HTTP/1.1
Host: mydomain.com

The DreamHost computer MUST be told about mydomain.com in order to do anything when a browser asks for a web site using that domain. And you tell the DreamHost computer by using the Domains -> Manage Domains -> Add New Domain / Sub-domain panel.
