Domain Elsewhere, Want Hosting Here

How do i add a domain to my account here where the domain stays at my registar and not transfered to dreamhsot, but have the hosting here on dreamhost?

Go to the registrar and set your domain to use the DreamHost DNS servers:

Is there any way not to have to change the name servers? Say can I just point a A record to my Dreamhost hosted domain? I already have a full DNS setup with godaddy. I don’t want to have to change the whole domain setup just to be able to host some flies one Dreamhost.

Thanks, Griffin

You can get your A record from the control panel here: Go to Domains -> Manage Domains and then click DNS for your domain. That will show you all of the DNS entries for your domain. Just copy the IP address(es) you need. Keep in mind that if your site gets moved to another server, or your server is reconfigured, then you’ll have to once again update your A record. So if your site stops responding, see if it’s because the IP address changed.

When I try and navigate to the ip address listed, I get this error:

Site Temporarily Unavailable

We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”

You can’t navigate to just the IP address. That IP address is home to many domains. The Apache config tells the webserver which directory to use based on the URL you type into your browser.

You need some form of DNS to do the IP address lookup for you when you type in your domain name.

You don’t need to transfer anything, just do as Scott says and change the nameservers over at GoDaddy.

How To Install PHP.INI / ionCube on DreamHost

Thanks for clearing that up Scott. However, my situation is that:

1 ) I have a blog,
2 ) I want to migrate that over to a WP installation at Dreamhost, eventually using the same URL.
3 ) I want to be able to setup wp and everything prior to pointing the URL to DH. Say, by creating & hosting on DH.

The problem with that is I don’t want everything to be installed and associated with “

So here’s what I did:

1 ) Setup DH to full host
2 ) Created a sub domain of,
3 ) Setup WP via goodies to be installed into

My question is, what do I do now? Can I someone associate another CNAME with the WP installation?

Thanks, Griffin

Set up a server alias to develop here at DreamHost before changing DNS.
