Custom PHP install & updating

#1

Today I received an email by the PHP development team that announced the immediate availability of PHP 5.2.2.

I understand that upgrading is important for security precautions, but I have never done an upgrade for a custom PHP install before. I would like to make sure that I am doing it correctly.

Can anybody provide some guidance, directions, resources on how to upgrade a custom PHP installation for a dreamhost account?

Current running version: php 5.2.0

Thanks Much,

The only thing you really need to do is

  1. change your htaccess so it does not point to your custom php(make back up first, this will bake it easier to change it back when you are done) (This is precaution so users do not see text of of your php script or error messages)
  2. make a copy of your php.ini file so you can put your custom settings back the way you had them.

Now just go through the same process you did when you first set up php.
The script may be a little different but the process is the same. I believe the script has the version number in it, so it probably would not be wise to use an old script if it still is on your system.
