Connect MySQL DB Problem!

#1

Hi There DH guys,

I have just suscribed to the DH MySQL Goodie and meet some problems to connect the DataBase…

shell> mysql -h mysql.frontierofdream.com -u leprechaun -p -D FoD
Enter password:
ERROR 1130: Host ‘modemcable051.226-200-24.que.mc.videotron.ca’ is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server

I’m surprised that my host is not allowed to connect it.
Does an admin could correct it ? Maybe i make a mistake…

If someone has an answer, I’m interested in !

Bye bye…

You trying to connect to it from your own machine/dial up at home?

The MySQL servers are configured (as far as I know) to allow connections from machines within the Dreamhost realm. That means you will need to SSH into your Dreamhost box, and then access your MySQL server from there.

Hope this helps.

You can also allow ranges of IP addresses or hostnames (be careful if you allow a range of hostnames) from the web admin panel on a per-user basis.

% is a wildcard; ie:
66.33.200.%
%.hq.newdream.net

Just edit the user you want to allow privs for.

Hey! I didn’t know this! That’s pretty cool but as you said, dangerous for those who are unsure of what they’re doing and probably best left to only DH machines.

Hm. I wonder what the possibilites of this are…

Thanks wil for your quicks and numerous answers,

That’s great, I have configured an ssh entry to a DH box.
It works… I can connect my new DB =] Yehaaa !
I can understand that putting a % in the user user table for the host row is a little bit unsecure

I haven’t try your second solution…

Excuse my poor skills in english ;(

That’s great.

Please note, however, that I’m “Wil” and the other guy is “Will:slight_smile:

I’m the one who speculates and gives the vague answers. He’s the one that nails it down and gives you exactly what you’re looking for, backed up by solid experience and knowledge.

You and me, Wil. That’s okay. At least we try, and they know that DH users are friendly and helpful. Besides, we have our own areas of expertise.

And as usual, Wil is being far too modest. You would be well advised to listen to his advice (and I don’t know about my comments being backed up by solid knowledge and experience, but I guess it goes to show that you can fool some of the people some of the time).

In fact, I’m sure Wil probably deserves a free DreamHost something-or-other for being so helpful (and nice) on this forum.

Since we’re on the subject, do you remember the guy who wanted one of us to change our name so it would be less confusing? :>

Uh, oki sorry for the mistake “wil” and “will”

I want to inform you that i have tried to install IkonBoard3.02a and it works properly, but i’m not sure it rules in mod_perl. But it works…
And phpBB 2.0.1 too but I think you have already tested it.

I have an other question to submit to your great minds…
Can I see the apache logs on DH somewhere ?
I have try to find it without success ;(
It’s easily for debugging sometimes…
shell> tail -f /usr/httpd/logs/mydomain.log on my own computer. I have read some stuff about editing httpd.conf and htaccess.conf but do i need some authorizations from the wonderful DH’admins…

I have to edit my vhost to put my website in mod_perl, loading startup.pl
Can i do it somewhere…

“A+” as we say in French
Thanks for your advise

In the logs/ directory of your home directory…
note that you may not get a lot of debugging information here; a lot of scripts will give the nondescript ‘premature end of script headers’ or something like that.

Sometimes there are more detailed errors in the suexec log; you don’t have access to that, but if you are debugging a really hairy script, you could ask support to grep through the suexec log for you.

We don’t support mod_perl on shared hosting plans for a number of reasons (the short story is that mod_perl doen’st work very well in this type of environment). We use it internally (the web panel, for example, is in mod_perl), and could possibly support it on dedicated machines.

Hm. I don’t remember that one? I’ll go for a look through some old posts.

I think it was one of the bobs – perhaps the one with whom i had a long argument (on an unrelated topic).

Ah. I remember that thread. Ah, the memories.
