So I’m curious how one might go trying to install Clearspace on a hosted solution like Dreamhost. Is this even possible? Seems like it may need a bit more access to the server than I currently have.
Your best hope for info is from the people at Jive Software or at least the support community. It sounds really heavy for a shared hosting solution - openfire probably wants to be a server making it more unsuitable.

It is not possible. You need a different hosting solution that offers JSP / Servlet/ Application Server hosting. DreamHost does not offer those, much less allow persistent processes, with its shared hosting.
