Chmod not working

I’m playing with some 3rd party php scripts, trying to help myself learn a bit, but I’ve run into a problem. I’m using puTTy to access my shell acct and I need to do a chmod on a couple files. I keep getting this error no matter what I try to change it to:
chmod: changing permissions of ‘file.php’ : Operation not permitted

I’ve tried using both 755, 777, and 706 and I get the same error. I’m not sure if I might be doing something wrong or if my shell acct might be borked. I tried to check permissions on that and there weren’t any that I could see to set

hey… I think you’re onto something… it’s not listed as me… but I tried to do a ‘chown username file.php’, it came back with an ‘operation not permitted message’

it’s a canned set of php scripts that I’m just playing with. I ftp’d it up there and once I get it working, I’m gonna start changing some stuff. Maybe if I open it and resave it here and send it back up it’ll work… I’ll try that after lunch
