Changing WP theme permissions to writeable

#1

Hi,
I’m trying to install a new theme that I bought but I get the error “Are you sure you want to do this?” The theme seller tells me "It looks like your permissions are not set to writeable (777). http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions."

I’m even more confused after reading that page. Last time I uploaded a theme I had no problem. Can anyone tell me how to change the permissions? I don’t see this in Settings etc or in my host control panel (I have Dreamhost).

Thank you!
-Andrew

You can change permissions with an FTP client. This should help:

If you have any questions, you’re always welcome to email our support team for help (just include the full path or at least the theme name)! Just hit the “Contact Support” link in your web panel.

Not sure why they want 777… that’s dangerous and if you need to set it temporarily for some reason you should definitely NOT leave it that way. The most important quote on the page you linked, even says so:
