Changing Nameserver

For transferring a domain, it says to change the nameservers first on the other host first.

By doing so will that make it so that when the domain is transferred, there will be no down time while the dns info is updated?

I asked because i transfered couple of domains over from godaddy to see how long it would take, and the hole process took under an hour.

but the domains (witch are just redirects) do not work currently.

You should create an account(s), transfer files/setup databases, make sure it works, then change the nameservers at your current registrar in order to push the new Host live. There will be minimal “downtime” - some parts of the world might still direct traffic to your old host for an hour or two (until propagation has completed fully).
