Can I get dreamhost to be any faster?

#1

okay, i’m about to import a forum from another hoster - discount-hosting.comr…they’re not really still going properly anymore so it’s time to move

check out the difference in speed for the same forum…i’m on mrpibb

http://www.emusonacid.co.uk/forum/
http://www.lsdee.com/forum/

already when i moved my other forum traffic has disappeared as the site is so sluggish - is this just the way it is on dreamhost? Can I request a faster shared server!?

#2

Hmm. I get about 3 seconds to display everything. Is this atypical?

A little sluggish at first but page loads are about 1 sec.

Very responsive at present.

Might have been DNS propogation causing a lull earlier.

I’ve heard that you can request a server move. If others are actually having no trouble accessing your site, it could be that the slowness is happening sporadically, just like at our sites.

i wonder if it could be a uk thing…i’m in the uk…
i’m not particularly technical but if i ping the urls i get
160ms for the dreamhost version
35ms for the discount-hosting version (emusonacid.co.uk) - could someone please ping these domains from the us and tell me what they see…
www.emusonacid.co.uk
www.lsdee.com
thanks for your help.

#6

Ping is directly related to the distance you are from the recipient.

Considering you’re in the UK your ping to a UK based server will be lower

Sure!

www.emusonacid.co.uk - 160ms
www.lsdee.com - 12 ms

… from the greater Los Angeles area.

#8

omg I knew it !!

rl hosts DH from his bedroom !!

#9

thanks for your replies - ping seems to correlate with the delay in opening dreamhost pages - would this also correlate?

#10

Not really.

With the difference in ping being so small time-wise (milliseconds) there should be no noticeable difference between page load times from one to the other. The only lag I had when I tried earlier was with the .uk domain and that was only for the first request (likely while my browser resolved the site via DNS - I’m in Australia) after which it functioned quite well. The DH one worked fast for me at that time - but that could change at any time for any number of reasons.

I’ll try it again for you but my ISP is useless and my connection offshore is failing at present.

Okay… the US one is coming in strong, the UK one is lagging badly - but I’d suggest that’s due to my crappy connection at the moment.

mumbling I wish my ISP had a blog

#11

I just actually browsed to the uk site (just pinged it for earlier test) and it is very fast responding and loading for me… even the forum loaded in about .5 second.

The .com was about the same loading the forum.

You should consider ordering a PS server.

I dunno… it loads super fast for me. Faster than this one actually!

The UK one loads fast now too (I think my ISP heard me yelling at the screen)

Both forums are very responsive. The US based one is a bit faster from my end (less than 1 sec load time), but that is likely due to my location rather than any problems at the UK site itself.

#14

Yep! I’m finding both sites loading quickly and the forums on both sites are running faster than I’m used to seeing on populated phpBB forums.

#15

well i’ve made a little video (3mb) about 33 seconds - you can really see what i’m talking about at around 17seconds - there’s no mistaking that the second tab (the dreamhost one) is a lot slower, not a complete disaster, just makes the experience a bit more clunky…

I get the reverse of your demo.

Have you tried a local traceroute to the US server?

Your routes and pings are standard once you’re out on the Internet, but there seems to be a bottleneck in communication between your PC and the router (and sometimes between your router and your ISP).
