Call MediaElement.js player manually in theme

Does anyone know how to call the MediaElement.js player for embedding it into a theme?
I already know about the short-code… I wonder if something like this would work:

<?php echo do_shortcode('[audio src="audio-source.mp3"] '); ?>

Okay…tested and that works. Seems like there would be another way to do this though without resorting to short-codes.

Looks like I can also do this if I wanted more control:

<!-- [if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');</script><![endif] -->
<audio class="wp-audio-shortcode" id="audio-286-1" preload="none" style="width: 100%" controls="controls"><source type="audio/mpeg" src="audio-source.mp3"><a href="audio-source.mp3">audio-source.mp3</a></audio>

You’d want to call it via wp_enqueue_script -

wp_enqueue_script('wp-mediaelement' );
