Building from src?

#1

i know that DH allows for installs from a source code, but i couldnt really make that happen…

im trying to install lftp, so i can transfer files better, and my make install fails on creating the man file… !

 /bin/mkdir -p '/usr/local/share/man/man1'
/bin/mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/share/man/man1': Permission denied

i understand why, but can anyone help on fixing that.

THERES MORE!

i now overriden that with the config.status script and i think it ignores the man file, which is fine by me, but failing on a lib now?

lftp-4.4.0/src'
 /bin/mkdir -p '/usr/local/lib'
 /bin/sh ../libtool --silent --mode=install /usr/bin/install -c liblftp-tasks.la liblftp-jobs.la '/usr/local/lib'
/usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/lib/liblftp-tasks.la': Permission denied
make[2]: *** [install-libLTLIBRARIES] Error 1

not as fine.

it is ok to install this? can i do it somehow?

thanks!

“make install” attempts to install the application system-wide, which you cannot do on a shared hosting server. (Assuming that’s what you’re on.)

Running the ./configure script with a “–prefix=$HOME” option should install it to your home directory, which may work better.
