Basic cron job question

Hi all.

Is there a delay when setting up a new cron job?

I set up a job to run at short intervals but it doesn’t start right away. I’m wondering if that’s because of my script or if there is a scheduling system that keeps the job from going into effect right away.

Thanks for any help.

Excerpt from man cron:

"cron checks each minute to see if its spool directory’s modtime (or the modtime on /etc/crontab) has changed, and if it has, cron will then examine the modtime on all crontabs and reload those which have changed. "

Files have to get copied, etc., so there is a small delay. I usually allow a few minutes before I expect changes to take effect.
