Bad Download Speeds

For the past week or so, I’ve been getting bad DL speeds on riviera. Starts at 200 kb/s for a few seconds, then goes down to a shameful 95 kb/s.

My friend’s site hosted on is experiencing the same thing.

I can fully confirm that it isn’t a problem on OUR end.

I am just curious, is anyone else having problems similar to this? My support tickets are seeming to go unanswered for a lot longer then usual…

Trace complete.

Can you put up a test file at a url on your site so that others can test and confirm to you the speeds they are obtaining?

I haven’t been having any problems myself, but if you provide a link I’m sure lots of us would be happy to provide you with some additional datapoints for download rates.

Your latency seems fine. I assume you’ve test the other typical dreamhost download sites to see if it’s a routing issue?

Also, is your server otherwise responsive?

Oh, and are you speaking in kilobits or kilobytes?

I don’t know what to think anymore…
I just tried DL’ing and…

Yea. What is going on lmao

Here is a test link you can try Light this City interview.flv

Speeds have gone up a little, but I am still downloading at 260 kb/s which is respectably low for a FIOS connection

The screenshot seems to indicate an unreasonably high rate for a Comcast cable connection. That’s >40mbit/s which is greater than the theoretical limit for Docsis 2.0.

I maintain that speed for a good 5-6 seconds…then it drops to 300 kb/s, then to 200 kb/s , and it hovers around 150 kb/s 200 kb/s

and I am talking about kilobytes

Can you provide a URL to a data file that’s a meg or so? When I troubleshoot this, I start with a ‘wget’ from my home machine, and then my dreamhost machine to check speeds.

Yea, Try this right here. Light this City interview.flv

or Light this City interview.flv

I just got an average of 603 KB/s over the 22 MB of Light this City interview.flv … and that was over my ADSL while still driving my webcam.

I don’t know what else to do to increase my download…
I have 8000 kbits down/700 kbits up ( yes bits ) on

Any suggestions?

I’m sorry, but I don’t. The speed you are capable of receiving is not really related to the speed with which the content is served (though it is nice to be able to receive it as fast as it can be sent).

I got as good with your site as I have ever gotten anywhere given my connection, so I don’t know what to suggest. :frowning:

I got around 600 KB/s from New York / New Jersey (similar latency to you, Michael).

I wonder if Comcast is screwing with your packets?

Do you get the same download speed when you ftp or sftp file file directly from your account?

BTW, you can at least breathe a little easier since your users are getting good download speeds - or at least speeds better than you…

I got 4 Megs/second from CalState Los Angeles:

solar% wget -O /dev/null “ Light this City interview.flv”
–19:02:15-- Light this City interview.flv
=> `/dev/null’
Connecting to||:80… connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 200 OK
Length: 23,240,885 (22M) [text/plain]

100%[============================================================================>] 23,240,885 4.07M/s ETA 00:00

19:02:21 (4.01 MB/s) - `/dev/null’ saved [23240885/23240885]

Yea, it’s good to know that at least my users are getting good download speeds. The speed isn’t noticeable when loading up the web page so thats good :wink:

Dreamhost is talking to me now so I think we’ll identify the problem
