I get an error that a user already exists in the system when trying to add a new user to the VPS. I know the user doesn’t exist on the VPS, is it a global user database? Can I force a user from the shell and manage it myself?
The quick answer: If a username is taken, choose a different username.
And the longer answer: Yes, the user database is global. That’s so that we can move users between servers without having to rename them.
Creating a user on your VPS manually (using an admin account) isn’t recommended, as it’ll be removed again when we update the password file on your VPS. Personally, I just use a unique prefix for all my usernames, so I don’t have to worry about other people getting in the way.
