Adding shell user - username is already being used

#1

Just moved my hosting over to Dreamhost. I’m trying to add a shell user. Get the error, “* The username you picked is already being used.”

Am I unable to set up a shell account that has the same name as anybody else on the Dreamhost server, rather than just under my domain? Because I can set up a mailbox with the same username, no problem. But if I delete that, then try re-adding it as a shell user, I still get the same error.

For customers using the shared hosting, you are part of a cluster of machines, and regardless of your domains, usernames are unique throughout the cluster. This goes the same for mailboxes. When you setup a mailbox, you’re actually setting up a “mail-only”, and then like regular users, have addresses configured that determine which users get the messages.
