Now it’s saying “connection refused,” but I’m not getting 404s anymore.

Yeah, I’m getting that error as well. It is almost as if the web doesn’t recognize your name server - I’m accessing it from Philadelphia, USA, in case that information is important to you.

I changed a couple of existing files on the server. How could I have possibly screwed up the nameservers?

Okay, you appear to be back up again. I noticed that the server (basic-argon.rhod.dreamhost.com) was “temporarily unavailable”.
