3rd party backup software options

The list of compatible 3rd party Mac compatible backup software on DreamHost’s forum seems to have a HUGE OVERSIGHT… the inability to back up remote servers. I’ll list the recommended apps here:

Strongsync: This appears to be a DropBox type service. I don’t think it can copy files from remove servers to DreamOjbects.

Arq: This product appears to backup your local machine only (again, I need it to copy files from remove servers to DreamOjbects)

CloudBerry Backup: No mac support. Not an option.

Duplicati: Impossible to install. All attempts failed. Not an option.

Immortal Files: I don’t think it can copy files from remove servers to DreamOjbects.

So there you have it… NO MAC APPS with the ability to copy files from remove servers to DreamOjbects.

IMPORTANT: GoodSync was able to copy files from remove servers to DreamOjbects… but now the app is much more strict and demands true Amazon S3 URLs and is rejecting the “objects.dreamhost.com” URLs… so any attempt to use GoodSync with DreamObjects is now failing.

PLEASE POINT ME TO SOME BACK-UP SOFTWARE THAT WILL: 1) WORK ON A MAC, 2) WORK WITH REMOVE SERVERS, AND 3) WORK WITH DREAMOBJECTS.

These types of applications are surprisingly rare. I’ve looked for them too and not found many options. Generally what they do is act as a middleman for the transfer and pull down data from one server to your machine and then upload it to another. That means it’s pretty inefficient.

The more efficient method would be to upload the data directly from the server. If you’re willing to go that route, then I’d recommend s3cmd, especially using the sync option. http://s3tools.org/s3cmd-sync You can download the zip file and run it from the unzipped directory. Directions for that are here - http://wiki.dreamhost.com/S3cmd

And we’re still working on GoodSync support with DreamObjects again.

Justin,

I’ll give you the US dollar equivalent of ONE MILLION Iranian Rials if you find something that has all the features I need… or get GoodSyc to fix their code.
