Private message scamming
I just got a private message on this forum that was one of those silly scams where some foreigner claims to have lots of money for me. Is anybody else having this issue?

Add me to the list as well - same scammer. Please ban this spammer ASAP.

Same here from the same scammer. I put him on my ignore list, hoping that DH monitors the aggregate ignore lists of all users.

RE: Private message scamming
Yep, I'm aware of the issue (I got one as well). Normally PM spam of this variety is mitigated somewhat by the fact that we require a 60-second delay between each PM, but apparently this spammer was patient enough to hit "Send" every minute for three hours.

Until I can figure out a more comprehensive solution, I've lowered the limit to one message every five minutes. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any better solutions available in standard MyBB, but I'd be interested to hear any ideas or suggestions you folks have.

I'm not sure "patient" is the word here. "Determined" is a nice, polite alternative, but I'm feeling that the most apropos would be just garden-variety "stupid". Mine was deleted before I had a chance to see if a website or phone number was involved so it'll just hafta be the email spammers to bear my demented and often wroth sense of humor.

Quickly perusing through the myBB docs seems there aren't user levels that would allow an admin to conditionally allow (..in this case, thems what actually has a DH hosting account) to send a private message.
Time to get that Happy Dreamhost Democratic Workplace Award-Winning, Employee-Owned Programming Staff on the ball with a mod, eh?

I for one am all for forming hunting parties and tracking these Internet miscreants to their very doors, dragging them from their homes, burying them up to their necks and forcing them to watch live "The Biggest Loser" squat-thrust auditions until they scream for a merciful death.

Just a thought.

Right now we don't actually track which forum accounts link up with hosting accounts, but that can always be changed. Similar logic might make sense for deciding who can post links from newly created accounts, too...
