Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
Thought you guys might find this interesting.
http://akensai.com/source-server-with-dreamhost-ps/

NOTE:
Usage on PS from a 32 slot gameserver running > 10 Plugins
RAM: 280mb (full) 110-130mb (empty)
Load: 5-10mb (full) what load average? (empty)
Screenshot (Full Server): http://imgeasy.com/images/use.png

Also Note:
This PS has nearly everything un-needed removed, and ONLY a game server running on it, nothing else.

RE: Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
That's awesome! A few cautionary notes:
  • Don't expect Support to be able to help you much with detailed issues. We train them to be experts in debugging issues running web applications, but it's luck of the draw whether the one you get will know anything about game servers. Most of them won't be able to do much for you.
  • Be generous with RAM for unusual applications like game servers. Running out of memory is handled reasonably gracefully by a web server (typically you'll just get sporadic 500 errors when you're hitting your limit), but other applications like game servers are more likely to just crash outright.

Definitely cool to see people trying new and different things on Dreamhost PS, though. Keep it up!

Awesome. Now I really want a PS. Tie to start saving. There are so many mods that don't have any servers running, and a speedy server in the US is better than none at all. (Australia FTL - Hosting costs sooo much!)

Aye aye, I talked with a few people on support (cant remember names) asking before I tried it, didnt want to piss the lovely DH off, after all. :0

For resources, only thing I have running on the PS's is lighthttpd, after some trial and error I found out that a 32 slot tf2 server will run at the following

250mb ram (max)
5-10mb load average

Compared that with one of my sites, moderate traffic, and its half.

Also, what the hell are you guys feeding these virtual boxes? lol
my findings on the usage required on a DH PS is 1/3 of what it takes on my actual box running redhat.

RE: Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
Could you use
$ less /proc/cpuinfo
to get the CPU info or would that just return the 'virtual' CPU info?

Try protein folding on it next Wink

So they aren't overly special. Dual core 2.4ghz Xeon.

Shared servers are more awesome, although they need to be.

At least I'm away from my previous host....
Server load of 70 != fun Sad

RE: Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
I actually like the DH PS more than my own box, cant really explain that one, it makes no sense, but I simply do.

RE: Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
My 'box' is a P4. It would probably be valued at $5. Dreamhost shared server dominates it.

RE: Running SRCDS on DreamHost PS
Haha, nah.

I've seen some datacenters trying to rent out P4's for $100/mo,
resellers love em because stupid people have no idea what to look for in specs, see a P4 for $50/mo and think "AWESOME DEAL!".

Beats some of the rigs I've seen around, still people out there running basic web services off servers from the early 90's.
