I'm having trouble uploading anything to my hosting. It says I'm on terrabellum hosting. I've tried uploading webpages to all of my directories in filezilla but they don't seem to be correlating when I refresh the browser. I'm not really sure in what folders i'm supposed to put the files or what exactly the problem is so I'm having trouble explaining my situation.

I had someone work up a template for me and now I need to change some things and am new.

My domain hosted here southbayfitnessfocus.com shows the DNS servers pointing to dreamhost. There is a Wordpress template currently live on the site and yet when I log in through FTP, I cannot see any files.

What is the ftp server?
When using southbayfitnessfocus.com
with username breban1 and the correct password, I get login failed.

If I login using enif.dreamhost.com, I only see log and maildir folders.

Please advise how I can upload files to the root folder to change out what is currently live on the site. What am I missing here?

Resolving shared server down because "killed for uid ram"

I have a shared server on dreamhost that runs http://www.speedview.co (the site uses WordPress and MyBB)

Dreamhost support has said that I am having problems with scripts. I am not an expert by any means (know enough to get myself into trouble) and could use some help troubleshooting this.

Here's what Dreamhost say:

I have a shell user, and can login with WinSCP then 'open in putty'

I change the directory:

cd /home/speedowl/logs/speedview.co/http

I can paste the first command:

cat access.log| awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq -c |sort -n

It gives 10,000 hits from what I think are my own site, then the next IP is about 200 hits. The site is only seeing 100 hits/day, mostly referrals from car discussion forums.

I don't think there's anything wrong what that - nothing says 'many many hits'

So I run the next command:

It says memory usage 28.5 Mb/256Mb in the footer
PHP memory limit: 90M
Wordpress memory limit: 32M

All plugins off:
It says memory usage 24.5 Mb/256Mb in the footer
NextGEN gallery is a fatty at almost 3 Mb
Everything else is using < 1 Mb

Sound reasonable?

The MyBB site uses about 7 Mb of memory. (it's admin panel also says memory limit 90M)

MyBB and WordPress are both on the same user right now.

If I switch myBB to another user (same shared account) will this help? (how are memory limits handled at Dreamhost shared accounts?)

PHP contact form suddenly not responding

I've opened a ticket on this, but I'm afraid they may just try to blame the script.

For SIX YEARS I've used the exact same PHP contact page (the default one built by Rapidweaver). Its always worked flawlessly on Dreamhost. Today I noticed that a PHP application form that is supposed to send out an email wasn't sending anything. It was still populating a MySQL database, but wasn't sending email.

That's two separate, previously functioning PHP emailing forms suddenly not working. Can anyone help with this?

update:

This was due to a mass spam attack on some Dreamhost servers. All mail was being held, but not deleted.

Trying to stop hotlinking

My stats say I've got a lot of links to .jpg and I want to stop that. I've tried several different methods I found both in the DH wiki and a few other places but no matter what I try, I get a File 500 on my sites.

I would like to block all images except the requests coming from my own sites (including sub domains) and 2-3 other sites I regularly post images on.

The latest attempt is this:

Does it matter where it goes in relation to other stuff in the .htaccess?
The list of places to block is huge so I'd rather allow a few than list all that I know I want to block.

The replacing image is from one of the sites I got the code from. (http://altlab.com/htaccess_tutorial.html)

Any advice? I know the simplest way is to change the directory name where I keep my images then just change the URL where I have images. Except I would have to change it for all the images and for one site, that would be quite difficult. I am lazy.

Hosting Without Domain Name

I'm currently rebuilding a site and want to setup a hosting package with a clean wordpress install. I can't seem to find a way to do that without associating it with a domain name.

I'd prefer just to do it by IP for now and then redirect the exiting site once it's live / tested etc.

Any tips?

Please FTP inside the theme folder and open the includes folder, you'll find footer.txt inside
Copy & paste it to the theme root folder and rename it to footer.php to overwrite the current footer.php you've modified.
Finally, refresh your page HERE to go back to your homepage.

How to show up higher on Google (and other) searches

I am having trouble getting my new website to show up on google searches. The URL is http://hopeofafricayouth.com but I would like it to show up (hopefully high on the list) when people type "Hope of Africa" or "The Hope of Africa", which is the name of the organization. I added "youth" to the end of the domain name because hopeofafrica.com was taking by a domain seller who wanted a ridiculous amount of money to buy that domain. If I type "Hope of Africa Youth" into the search bar, it comes up right away, but without the word youth, the seach doesn't seem to find us, even though the words "Hope of Africa" are all over the website. What the search does find are other organizations such as Hope For Africa, even though their domain names are different than the search parameters. Any ideas how I can get my website higher on the search results?

I'm writing a PHP app that will get triggered by a chron job to send out a reminder email to my Announcement List subscribers once a week. For some reason I can't find some answers to very basic questions in the documentation:

1) Does anyone know where you can find a complete list of variables (e.g., --their_email--, etc.) that DreamHost's Announcement List function will recognize?

2) Is there any way to expand the list of variables to include information I'm collecting on the user on my end?

OR

3) Is there a way to add custom variables to those the Announcement List uses? It looked like the answer was "yes" to this in the "new features" — but as I read into it, it looked more like the answer was "no".

Increasing PHP memory and exec time on VPS

I've been having problems with BackupBuddy's Export Site function. (BackupBuddy is a popular Wordpress plugin.) BuB tech support has asked (among other things) the following:

Can anyone tell me how to do this, or point me to a tutorial? Or am I playing with fire if I attempt to do so?

Domain Redirecting

Okay... I have my hosting for the domain through DreamHost. The website is http://www.upstatepridesc.org. I created a CNAME record to send the domain URL to the hosting website.

The problem is, I recently got control over this Domain URL from the non-profit's previous webmaster. They had the website redirect to http://www.upstatepridesc.org/pride2010/...e_SC.html. How do I get rid of the /pride2010/upstate_pride_sc.html redirect so that the website will just go like it is supposed to?

chmod to 666 not working on specific files

I'm trying to recover my business site from a PHP injection hack on the 18th. I decided to scrap the old site and install new, but for some reason, I can't set permissions on the configuration file to 666. When I FTP in to do it, it resets to 444 instantly. The part that's making my head explode is that it worked just fine yesterday on my test site, but now that one isn't working either. All other files I can change to any permission I want, no problem. I have a ticket in, but I'm just needing advice on anything I might be over looking. It's been a long weekend.

Problem with one-click install

When trying to do a one-click install for Wordpress, I am receiving the following error by email:

"We were unable to set up wordpress as requested at:
http://www.example.com/

The problem was directory /home/blank/example.com is not empty! Please re-install, specifying an empty (or new) directory.

Please correct this and go to our web panel and re-submit your
wordpress installation request."

Can anyone tell me how to empty the directory so I can install WP?

Well I'm slightly dubious about this idea of encouraging ordinary Dreamhost customers to become fluent with shell commands, but perhaps if we try a specific example we can see how we fare. A good example would be where it says in the wiki,

I tried that and it produced no output. Hopefully, that would mean that I don't actually have any world-writable directories. However, obviously one should not rely on that. Maybe it produced no output because the communications link just went down.

So I tried to find an option to the 'find' command that would produce a summary line at the end saying how many files it matched. Then my automatic site-checking job could grep the log file for a line saying something like "0 file(s) matched".

I couldn't find any such option. Could someone help please or suggest another approach?
