Hey! Yeah! Me too! Well, at least from one correspondent using Hotmail, though it seems to be erratic. It bounces back to Hotmail with a 554 error code (yes, relay access denied). Could SpamAssassin have any bearing on this ( I doubt it, I don't think SA bounces email back)?

Is SpamAssassin a plug-in? If so, I don't believe I'm using it. But 9 times out of ten, I do receive these emails. As a matter of fact, one person just forwarded me the delivery status notification, and it came thru the 2nd time.

No, Spamassassin is your email filter, if you have enabled that. In my case, I've installed my own, newer version of SA (3.1.7) for my email accounts which are installed as full (not mxxxxx) accounts.
Anyway, as I said, I think it's doubtful that SA is the culprit.
I've seen this error discussed before, but that has been in the context of trying to send, not receive, email, I believe.

I seem to be having the same problem RECEIVING emails (sender gets this error).
I've recently had 3 different hotmail correspondents sporadically receiving "relay access denied" bounces when sending emails to 2 different email addresses on one of my dreamhost domains. (They can often re-send OK).
Haven't found an answer here, or wiki, or googling (yet).

It's happened before. Could be just a coincidence, but they are shuffling file servers and changing Mailman.

Thanks, but these bounces started almost 2 weeks ago. And, as far as I know they've all been for emails from hotmail users.

Intermittent problems are a pain!
There have been many changes - memory additions, server moves - including a couple weeks ago.
The linked thread involved a "server misconfiguration." Your mail server/cluster may have "an issue" that should be reported to Support, if you haven't already.

I am getting the same error as the original poster. Creating a Hotmail account so I can see what's going on, I get the following, very non-specific error:
"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.
address@domain.com"
I went ahead and created a fake email address to a non-existant domain, and I received exactly the same error. It appears hotmail thinks my domain doesn't exist?
Thoughts?

to J@VetNetwork,
I've been battling this for weeks. I keep emailing support about it, and they haven't been too helpful. One support guy told me this was due to Hotmail's spam filters! Duh!

We have a ticket in with hotmail with very explicit descriptions of the issues. We'll see if there's any answer from "the evil empire," but I doubt we'll be hearing much.

I've 'reported' my problem to dreamhost support, but I haven't gotten anywhere. I get about 9 out of 10 messages sent from hotmail users. The others get an email back:
"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.
my_name@my_domain_name.com"
One of the support specialists said that it was due to Hotmail's Spam Filter. Riiiight. Can anyone explain that one to me?

FWIW, it is probably not a coincidence that similar problems are being reported with incoming Yahoo emails:

Well, crap. I'm getting this problem too.
I just got a call from a friend on hotmail who said he got a "delivery status notification" email. He said it happens half the time. When I emailed him to confirm that I never got his email, my email TO him was deemed "undeliverable."
Another person told me that some emails I send her end up in her junk folder. Emails with nothing but some blah blah text. Nothing spammish at all.
What's going on?
