The DNS entries for my Jabber server are CNAMEs for my main domain. I guess this is good news, as all you need is the IP address of your DreamHost webserver, even though you're not using it. I hope your domain still exists here, even though DNS doesn't point to it.

If you click on Domains -> Manage Domains, then DNS next to your domain name, you should see all the info you need. For my domain, my Jabber entries are:
aim.jabber.mydomain.com
conference.jabber.mydomain.com
msn.jabber.mydomain.com

(minus the .mydomain.com, as that's implied within DNS) they are all CNAMEs for mydomain.com, which is the IP address of MYWEBSERVER.dreamhost.com

Wow. I have nothing to add from the legal perspective other than the advice from dwr and scott sounds good to me, but I did want to chime in with sympathy for your position.

I have a friend who had a similar situation with a real-world business where they formed a company together and then the "other guy" left to pursue other opportunities. He later came back to claim his ownership rights and I think he had to be given a big payout to go away. This was a different situation from yours because there were actual business ownership interests involved.

A couple of extra thoughts:
1. I know your situation probably wasn't an official business, but one thought process is to consider what the conclusion would be if it were. Is there any current monetary value in the site and what would Bob's share be if he were considered an equal partner in the venture?
2. People who threaten legal action aren't the ones who take legal action. The first you'll hear from those folks will be the legal notifications.
3. Don't take legal advice from anyone who hasn't studied law. Common sense doesn't apply in the courtroom. (please apply this to me)
4. Bob is probably just ticked off for some reason and looking for revenge. See what you can do to find out what's really bothering him without "admitting" anything that will be damaging in court.
5. I'd really like to see how this would play out in front of Judge Judy. Have you considered proposing this to Bob? I think the show pays for any judgment.

Hi!

I moved one of my domains to my own DNS servers, but I still want to use DH's Jabber server. Can somebody tell me where my SRV records have to point? I can't point them to mydomain.com because mydomains.com's A record points to my VPS and I only want to host some subdomains with DH.

Thanks,
Jan

I'm surprised he claimed the ownership of the content. For my sites, my little disclaimer says that content is copyright of the creator. I wouldn't want to claim ownership of all content; especially if some of it may be slanderous or otherwise legally questionable (not that it is, but who knows what might show up).

What copyrights or legal print was on the site? Anything claiming rights?

I'm not a lawyer, but I just don't see how he can claim ownership of content he did not create.

I'm can't seem to get Perl and FastCGI to work. My script is the basic helloworld script on the wiki:
#!/usr/bin/perl

use lib qw( /home/myusername/local/lib/perl/5.8.8 );
use FCGI;
use Socket qw( :crlf ); # server agnostic line endings in $CRLF

my $counter = 0;
while ( FCGI::accept() >= 0 ) {
$counter++;

print
"Content-Type: text/plain",
$CRLF,
$CRLF,
"Hello World, in Perl FastCGI!",
$CRLF,
"I am process $$.",
$CRLF,
"I have served $counter request(s).",
$CRLF;
}

The script runs fine if I try to just run it. My .htaccess file looks like this:
Options +ExecCGI
AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(test/script/dispatch\.fcgi/.*)$ - [L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ test/script/dispatch.fcgi/$1 [PT,L]

But, but whenver I visit my domain I get these (not very helpful) error messages in my error.log:
[Sat Jul 26 16:07:01 2008] [error] [client 12.216.230.180] FastCGI: comm with (dynamic) server "/mnt/local/home/myusername/catalyst-test.mydomain.com/test/script/dispatch.fcgi" aborted: (first read) idle timeout (60 sec)

Any ideas or troubleshooting tips?

The best place to ask this question would be the legal section of dnforum.com, where they do have domain lawyers who come by to help with questions like this from time to time (at least they did when I hung there a little).

This is not "legal advice", but what I myself would do would be to send him a reply that says "Go get f'd".

Hello everyone, first time posting here! I have a dilemma and I respectfully ask that those with legal 'net knowledge give some insight to the issue...

Here's how it goes: There was originally a community website owned by another person (let's call him Bob) using a different webhost. Bob had problems with keeping up the site's maintenance, and after a few hacking attacks he let me take over its development and maintenance.

So I decided to scrap everything in the original website, and build a new one on my DreamHost account. Bob retained ownership of the domain and pointed the domain to my account.

I then set to work building the community website, and in time amassed a decently-sized and popular website with plenty of user content and customizations to the web applications I installed from scratch. Bob pretty much disappeared the entire time (for almost a year), dropping by every couple of months or so.

The last couple of months, me and other admins started building a new version of the site, to be placed on a different domain. We were going to just redirect the original domain to the new one, and slowly phase out the old domain until the new one came into dominance.

Bob was never a very likable guy in the first place, and recently we had a quarrel with Bob on how the site was managed. Bob then proceeded to redirect his old domain to another website without any warning, and we were forced to put the old site on the new domain prematurely. It goes without saying that it damaged the community on a large scale due to the confusion it caused, and we banned Bob as a result for web abuse.

This is not the primary issue. A month later Bob came back and sent me this message:

In reply to:

I will keep this short and sweet. Take down any forum posts and information prior to me switching the dns servers . You may, or may not be aware of the rights of a domain owner, the fact of the matter is who can claim the domain at any point in time, also can claim any content.

You are currently collecting money via google ads and various other affiliate programs on what I consider my property. You can take this message as you will, but I will and intend to fight this to the letter of the law and will pursue this in a legal fashion. It would behoove you to yield to this request and comply.

Should you decide not to comply with my reasonable request, I will be forced to pursue any and all civil actions against you and all parties associated with (the new domain/site) for costs, damages and associated fees.

Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

(Bob)

I want to know how much right he has to claim to own the content of the site. I owned the webhosting account afterall, none of the content in the site was made by him or was originally his, all he happened to own was the web domain that it pointed to for less than a year. And now all the site content is located on the domain that I own.

Who has more rights to the content? It's like saying that I could purchase a domain, point it to any site, and then claim to own it. Granted it was to dreamhost's dns server and I registered it to the dreamhost account, but in my opinion that makes for a massive gray area.

Your thoughts are most appreciated, thanks!

(By the way, we're complying to his demands and will be rolling in the new site tonight on our own domain/account. But I would still like to get this straightened out, and may want to archive the old content for public access. Also, the only revenue generated were from google ads, which is registered to my google account)

I guess the true move won't happen until next friday...but I do have a question, and i'd rather post it in here, rather than the status page.

DH states this: "Also if you have a domain you need up and you have the files locally, you can switch the user for the domain and upload your files to get your domain running."

Does this mean
• I create a new ftp user
• add that user to the domain

then I can upload my files? my current ftp user doesn't seem to work, even when i try to change the password.

The issue really isn't space, as the OP is using S3 for the backup site. The gray area is the actual content that's passing through his DreamHost account.

I suspect it's "ok" for what they're doing, but it's always nice to get the seal of approval from DreamHost itself.

The account space at DH (and all other professional, established webhosting companies) is to be used for webhosting, not for file storage. Yeah, I know - When does webhosting become storage and vice versa? It's a doosie.

Unlike many other companies DH do have a file storage system that is separated from your 'main' webhosting account. I can't recall the pricing structure in place off the top of my head but I remember it being on a 'per Gig' basis and dirt cheap in comparison to the available file storage businesses I looked at earlier this year.

Is the imported database local on your DreamHost account or are you trying to import it from your old site at another Host?

What I would do is take a backup of your old database. Download it to your own PC then upload to your DreamHost account. Then from phpmyadmin you can import the local database backup.

See this wiki entry here.

It's a little hard to troubleshoot this considering I don't know what plugin is causing problems, but you're receiving this error because that sql doesn't indicate what table to select from.

I would suggest searching your source code for "ORDER BY vid" in an attempt to identify what the problematic code is.

This is a complete shot in the dark but I would identify what version of PHP you're running, and whether the wordpress plugin claims to support that version.

I have tried the speed test suggested by Scott and my maximum upload speed was 82 Kb/second plus or minus a kilobyte for three different locations. If I can always achieve that speed with the first file I upload to my website with DreamHost in a session then I will be happy. I hope the switch to using SFTP provides a long term solution. Thank you for your assistance Scott.

Hi,
I've got a small mod_rewrite problem, where if i try using mod_rewrite at the same time as the addhandler for a custom php version i get error 500. If i remove the custom php from the .htaccess file, it works the way i want it to. The same goes if i remove the mod_rewrite code the custom php runs fine. I know the custom install of php is working fine because it is currently being used on all my other sites without any problems.
The only thing i have in the .htaccess is as follows:

AddHandler php-cgi .php
Action php-cgi /cgi-bin/php.cgi

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond $1 !^(index.php|application/images|application/scripts|application/css|application/content|application/settings|favicon.ico)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?$1 [L]

Can anyone spot what is wrong with it? Or show me another way of accomplishing the same thing with mod_rewrite. Thanks for any reply and or suggestions

It's not uncommon for an ISP to allow for a high speed burst which then settles down to your actual connection speed. If you want to test a sustained transfer, you can try a speed test such as the following:

Thank you Scott

I have switched from FTP to SFTP in response to your suggestion.

Using FTP I tried running a test of uploading two files of approximately 1 Mb in size. The first file was uploading at a speed of approximately 500 bytes/second when my connection with DreamHost spontaneously disconnected after only 4 Kb of the file had been uploaded. I then reconnected and the second file uploaded at about 80 Kb/second. The maximum speed I saw among the fluctuating speeds on the screen during the file uploads was 1000 bytes/second for the first file and 110 Kb/second for the second file. The speeds kept decreasing as the uploads progressed.

Under SFTP I have just tried uploading two files that are just over 7 Mb in size. Both the first and the second file uploaded at about 80 Kb/second. The maximum speeds I saw among the fluctuating speeds on the screen were about 400 Kb/second but they soon dropped to 80 Kb/second and then stayed fairly constant.

I will have to watch over the next few weeks to see if using SFTP does solve the problem. I have noticed in the past that the first file sometimes uploads as fast as the others in situations where I have recently connected to my website with Fetch. I have connected to my website at least a half dozen times with Fetch during the past two days.

If anyone else is considering switching from the default FTP to SFTP then I suggest you read the following two articles in the DreamHost Wiki:

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/SFTP

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Enabling_Shell_Access

In addition to selecting SFTP in Fetch (my FTP program on a Mac) I discovered that I also had to enter the DreamHost Control Panel and make a preference change in my account to enable SFTP protocol file transfers as explained in the two DreamHost Wiki articles.

I'm curious. If you FTP in, is there anything in your domain folder? If you're lucky, you'll find that empty folder that's showing an index and upload something into there while you wait for the transfer.

It's still unresolved, so bugging them isn't going to tell them something they don't already know.

What is your site? And how long has it been down?

Are you logged into FTP multiple times at once? My FTP client can do uploads in parallel, but each one takes one FTP connection. If you have your FTP client set to run more than 10 uploads at once before it goes to the queue, you'll get this.

I have mine set for 3, which is enough, considering I'm just using my one connection.

Hi all

I am on the dreaded lovejoy server that has been having issues. I see they are moving us to new hardware. I do have a question...all of my sites work, but they all have the 'index of' with nothing in the folders. When i do a status check it says 'Recent DNS changes may not have fully propogated yet.'

Should I hold off on contacting support...or because my sites are up with the index of...should i contact support and tell them everything is missing?

thanks

Actually, it is neither of those things. That is the result of the mod_security rules DreamHost has in place if you have "Extra Web Security" enabled for your domain, and you can learn more about it here:

It sounds to me that phpBB is changing them, though I am not positive about that. What I am positive about is that there is no reason to set permissions to 777 on a directory that is reachable from the web.

Irrespective of what you may have heard, or see in documentation, under suEXEC used at DreamHost 755 permissions is sufficient for the webserver to be able to write files.

Domain registrations are $9.95 per year. When you transfer here, they add one year to what you already paid for at the old place. Your registration will transfer here right away with the extra time added to it.

You can transfer the renewed domain. Yes, the problem is for the new registered domain.

Where you register the domain, and where you host the website can be different. While you wait for the 60 days to end, you can still host both websites and email here.

Hello. I had followed the instructions on the wiki to install my own PHP to get around some of the settings DH has configured. I downloaded the WebFTP package that dreamhost uses and installed it in a subdomain and I am having it use my PHP install instead of the default install (DH's).When I log into the WebFTP for the first time, I get an error 403, Service Unavailable. If i go back and enter my details again and login, it works. I looked in the error logs for this site and I saw the following (ip/hostname removed):

You can try using WebFTP from the panel under Domains -> Manage Domains and see if that does a better job.

Which FTP client are you using? And what permissions are you setting (eg. 755)? How long does it take before the change "unsticks?"

I am trying to change the directory called forums, used for phpBB forums. I figured this would be the place to ask, since phpBB isn't causing it.

You can look at your Apache access logs in your home directory under logs/yourdomain.com. Search for gu.gif or /stats/ and see what browser is requesting them and if there's a referer. The referer will show up right before the browser identifier.

The 17/7/2008 shouldn't be a problem, but the 17/6/2008 will have to wait.

If you paid for hosting here, you can still host all of your sites here, even if it is not registered here.

This isn't normal. What upload speeds are you seeing for the slow file and the fast files? Have you tried setting Fetch to use SFTP instead?

qualitytint.com is still cloaking. It should be a Fully Hosted domain in the Manage Domains section.

I have not found any way to investigate who the referer is using the default website statistics provided by DreamHost.

In reply to:

I get all kinds of failed requests for random junk, or outdated links.

I know what you are refering to by failed requests for random junk and outdated links. I have seen plenty of those listed. The random junk will usually show up in the statistics for a single month and then disappear. The outdated links will often appear for a month or two whenever I change my website by renaming, deleting or moving some files or directories.

The four items I mention in my original post are all items that have appeared regularly as having at least a few failed requests in every month's statistics since I first signed up for a DreamHost account in February. I therefore do not consider them random. I have determined through on-line research that some versions of the Internet Explorer web browser are causing the failed requests for the favicon.ico file and the web crawling robots of one or more search engines are probably causing the failed requests for the sitemap.xml.gz file. (I am not sure which one of the web crawling robots.) I expect that the failed requests for the gu.gif file and stats directory may also be caused by a web crawling robot but I am asking to see if anyone knows.

Hi,
I have about 10 sites to be transferred.
for 2 of these sites have a problem because I do not know if I can transfer them.
I have a renewed 17/7/2008 while the other I registered on 17/6/2008, and then goes out the 60 days.

I can record them equally or are there problems?

Hello

I am using Fetch 5.3 as my FTP program on a Mac OS X 10.4 computer to upload files and make changes to my website. I have a high speed internet connection through my telephone company.

When I login I can see a listing of the files and directories of my website. When I then try to upload a file to my website the first file always takes a very long time to upload. (A few minutes.) Once the first file is uploaded then I can upload any additional files and even a full directory full of files fairly quickly. (A few seconds.) Why does it take so long for the first file to upload? Is this normal behaviour?

Thanks. I now have both sites accessible, but all the pages besides the index for qualitytint.com shows teamgraphicsunlimited.com/qualitytint/page.html in the address bar. Is there a way for it not to show teamgraphicsunlimited.com/... ?? Is that where the cloaking comes in?

Thanks again

Edit the cloaking website so it's a Fully Hosted domain. Now you'll have real domain directories for both websites.

I get all kinds of failed requests for random junk, or outdated links. It's only if I get a failed request referred to by my own site that I look into it.

Hello

On the DreamHost Web Panel I select the following in sequence: Main Menu > Status> Site Statistics > Web Server Statistics - Monthly Report > Failure Report: Listing files, sorted by the number of failed requests.

I have noticed that the following four items are always on the list of "failed requests" every month:

/favicon.ico
/sitemap.xml.gz
/gu.gif
/stats/

I have looked up the first two items on the internet and learned what they are. I have followed tutorials I found on the internet to create a favicon.png file but I realize that visitors to my website using some versions of the Internet Explorer web browser will create "failed requests" searching for a favicon.ico file. Similarly I have followed tutorials I found on the internet to create a very small sitemap.xml file. I once tried compressing the file to a sitemap.xml.gz file but I did not notice any significant change in file size. I got the impression from the tutorials that I should have either a sitemap.xml file OR a sitemap.xml.gz file.

My question is why do I get a few "failed requests" for a "gu.gif" file and a "stats" directory every month?

I have never knowingly created a gu.gif file or a stats directory on my website. I have kept backup copies on my computer of every change I have made to my website since I joined DreamHost in February so I have been able to search through the backup copies to verify this. I have tried doing internet searches for "gu.gif" expecting that it may be some form of standard filename similar to favicon.ico, sitemap.xml.gz or index.html that I should become aware of but I have not found any reference to a gu.gif file.

To the best of my knowledge the only statistics being collected regarding my website are the default statistics collected by the DreamHost Web Panel and whatever statistics the search engine robots (Google, Yahoo ...) may collect. I am not aware of any reason to create a "stats" directory.

Does anyone know why I am getting a few "failed requests" every month for a "gu.gif" file and a "stats" directory?

Hello, newbie here. I need some help setting up multiple sites.

Currently our website qualitytint.com is cloaked(?) under teamgraphicsunlimited.com. Which worked fine since we weren't using the latter. We now want to upload a site for teamgraphicsunlimited.com. What is the easiest way to have both sites display properly?

Thanks for your suggestions.
