I have the html document all ready. Everything is set. The only problem, is that I just don't know how to make zrpg.net... that html document! How do you do it? I am really confused.

Right now, the page I want zrpg.net to be is zrpg.net/splash.html .

Hello

I haven't built a website in about 4 years now and I am going to rebuild my archiac site in Wordpress, because I can't be bothered to wait until I learn php. I have a registered a domain on Dreamhost, I have installed Wordpress, I haven't pointed the DNS away from the old site (and host) yet. I wanted to bring the site up to speed before launching it, which might take sometime.

My question is; is there a way to edit wordpress other than making it live on the web to edit? I guess I am old fashioned to want to do things like html days, plus I have a bunch of content to move over which will make my site look kind of stupid unless I get everything updated.

Okay, we recently ported our announcement list over to Dreamhost and I am working through the automation they have. Right now, our "automated' sign up goes through the forms by Bravenet. Not only does this add work for me, but it puts users through needless hoops.

I get an email saying they want to sign up for the list, then I have to manually enter them into web panel for the announcement list. Then, they get an email asking them to go click on the confirmation button. While trying to sign up, they have to go through all the Bravenet junk.

My understanding is that there is a way to have them sign up directly. They enter their info into a form and Dreamhost automatically sends them a confirmation email. Unfortunately, I do not know how to set this up. My web skills are limited to Dreamweaver and I cannot seem to find any documentation on the procedure to do so.

If anyone can point me to some easy instructions, I would surely appreciate it. You can take a look at what we have at http://www.henrystonemusic.com/emaillist.htm, so you can kind of see what I am going for. Just a form that automatically notifies Dreamhost of a list signup so they can automatically send a confirmation email.

Thanks Much!

Hey everyone,

I'm a little slow with these things and spent hours trying to figure this one out. So please bear with me. Any help will be much appreciated.

Basically I created a subdomain which will act as a file sharing/transfer platform. How do I create multiple FTP users that's only limited to that particular subdomain? I tried creating a new User but that gives access to everything.

I have a number of video type files (mpg, wmv, etc) loaded under a folder within my fully hosted web site and wish to make them available for download. I thought that I could just include the URL to the file in an email and then clicking it would automatically start the download process. However, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page".
I know the link is correct, I grabbed it off of an IE display of the index for that directory.
The URL I use is like this:

First post here, so please be gentle :-)

On my DreamHost account I originally set up an index.shtml page at the root to serve as my home page. But I recently set up WordPress in a subdirectory called /blog/ and I would like that directory and the WordPress install to serve as my home page.

I'm not sure if there is a setting in the DreamHost control panel that will allow me to make the /blog/ directory the home directory, or if I should use some type of .htaccess file to do that.

Alternatively, should I move all my WordPress files from the /blog/ directory up to the root? That seems risky to me.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks,
Bryan

Hi all,

So I was starting up a new forum for my company and it occurred to me that there are at least three very common sub-domains used for discussion forums:
forum.example.tld
forums.example.tld
discussion.example.tld

I obviously want to pick the most conventional one so people don't have to think when typing the URL.

Opinions? I think forum is the most popular, but don't have proof of this.

Thanks!

Hi
I've had a site hosted with DH for a few years but I want to make another site for someone else. I assume there is a way of doing this with out setting up a whole new DH account for them but I'm not sure how to do it. Is is simply a matter of putting their site in a folder in my webspace and setting up a domain to point to that? What if I wanted to set up something that required a database?

Thanks

Feeling like a dork.

I did the one-click install of phpbb and set up a forum as at a subdomain: forum.mydomain.com ... When I set it up I must have skipped over some text I was supposed to enter that shows up at the top of the page. No problem, I'll just edit the file ...

Problem. I have no idea where it is or how to find it. It doesn't show up in my manage domain section and it isn't noticeable anywhere when I open up my site: mydomain.com with the ftp software and hunt around in there.

I know that I have limited ability to do things with the one-click but ... does that mean I'm stuck with "A short text to describe your forum" in my header?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Sue

I am looking for a host for my non-profit organization's website. My most important requirement is to have the capabiliy for members to set up a user name and password for themselves that would give them access to the member directory. The administrator should be able to accept or deny any such application. This probably sounds pretty basic, but I am not in any way an expert at this. Does DreamHost offer something like this that would be easy for me to set-up?

Thanks!

Hi,

I've browsed the forums and I think I know the answer to this question, but I want to be REALLY careful about this. I've only used Dreamhost's standard mail up to this point. I'd like to see what it would be like to use Gmail to manage my mail. However, if I don't like it I will of course want to switch back to Dreamhost's. I want to make absolutely sure I'll be able to do that.

Thank you, and happy birthday in advance.

I'm a novice with a WordPress blog hosted at Dreamhost. I'd like to upgrade to the new 2.6 version. Based on information I've seen elsewhere, it appears I should be able to do this with a one-click upgrade.

But when I go to the Goodies/One-Click Install control panel, I only have two options:

1) Install new website software - easy mode

2) Install new website software - advanced mode

Should there be an "Upgrade previously-installed software" option. If so, how do I get it?

Thanks for any help people can provide. The instructions for doing a manual install make my head hurt.

Oh boy, you can tell Im new at all this stuff.

I read in the support wiki that Streaming audio is supported, but I cant seem to get it to work in the way Id like it too.

Im going to be mainly using MP3 files, but I can use WMA files if absolutely necessary. I would like to be able to have the user click on a title to listen to a streaming MP3, and have the option of a right-click and download, Ive seen this done before on other sites and like it.
I would like MP3s to start streaming in Windows Media Player preferably, because thats something most people have without having to d/l additional software.

Ive experimented with hosting media files in both mp3 and wma formats, and figured out how to properly link to them (thanks to this place) but on my personal computer I always get the Open With or Save As box. On another computer I did get a file to start streaming with QuickTime.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get the details out there. Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I'm a bit confused.
If I try backing up the domains directly it skips the email accounts, so I ordered a Manual Backup from the panel:
Home->Backup your account

After a couple of days I got an email telling me that the backup was available at
http://backups.dreamhost.com/2008-07-12-XXXXXXXXXXXX

Now, I can see these files in Firefox, but I can't access the folder in ftp using my usual login and password.
What am I doing wrong? How can I download this folder to store it locally?
Thanks for the help

Hiya!

I just signed onto DH, and I have an application question. I would like to set up a subdomain to perform development/make changes to a test website before opening it on the main domain. One app I would to play around with is the Zen Cart. Can I set up separate installations of Zen Cart, one on the test domain and one on the main domain? Or would I just need one installation for both versions? Will it be the same for the other apps DH provides?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I cant figure out how to link to anything that I have hosted with my DreamHost account.

I have a website hosted with a different company, but I use DreamHost to host files. I want to link to my Dreamhost files on my website, but I cant seem to find an address to link too. I have tried right-clicking and copying the link location, but it doesnt seem to be working.

For example, on my website I would want something that said "click here to view PDF" and then have a link that goes to a PDF file on my DreamHost account. How do I do that?

Help with a file htaccess. I should combine a code in htaccess for use php.ini and my old code.

My code:

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Admin"
AuthUserFile/home/www/z57053/vandetolk/admin/.htp

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond % {REQUEST_URI} / (i|css|admin|forum|utils)/.*
RewriteRule. - [L]

RewriteRule (. *) index.php [L]

For php.ini code:

Options +ExecCGI-Indexes +FollowSymLinks
<FilesMatch "php (.?) \. (cgi|ini) $">
Order Deny, Allow
Deny from All
Allow from env=REDIRECT_STATUS
</FilesMatch>

Help, please.
