Thanks for expanding on what I wrote. Some on that list I did not even know was there. Always learning. Yeah the wiki is a great place to look for answers. I guess I don't use it enough, totally forgot about it.

Just to add to what silkrooster said, and provide a convenient link to the information he mentioned:

" What is your DirectoryIndex setting?

The DirectoryIndex command lists all the files Apache should look for (in order) to determine what to display when somebody goes to a URL for a directory. That is, it's the default file name for your web site. Ours is set to:

DirectoryIndex index.html index.shtml index.htm Index.html Index.htm Index.shtml default.htm Default.htm default.html Default.html default.shtml Default.shtml page1.html index.pl index.cgi index.php index.php3 index.phtml home.htm home.html home.shtml index.wml

As long as you name your "index" file any one of those things, it will work!

If you have two files with names from that list, Apache will show the one that shows up first (e.g. index.html will show up, even if you have an index.php file in the same directory).

You can change your own DirectoryIndex setting to be anything you'd like via an .htaccess file too!"

By default DH expects a index page when someone logs onto your url. So renaming the splash.html to index.html and uploading it to the folder that matches your url will allow viewers to see your splash page.
There is a way to change the filename in the htaccess file to use another name than index, but I will have to let someone else tell you. I read about several times, never done and can not remember it. I cahalk that up to being old, but that does not fly when I talk to someone older than me. lol.
Take care,

I have the html document all ready. Everything is set. The only problem, is that I just don't know how to make zrpg.net... that html document! How do you do it? I am really confused.

Right now, the page I want zrpg.net to be is zrpg.net/splash.html .

Hello

I haven't built a website in about 4 years now and I am going to rebuild my archiac site in Wordpress, because I can't be bothered to wait until I learn php. I have a registered a domain on Dreamhost, I have installed Wordpress, I haven't pointed the DNS away from the old site (and host) yet. I wanted to bring the site up to speed before launching it, which might take sometime.

My question is; is there a way to edit wordpress other than making it live on the web to edit? I guess I am old fashioned to want to do things like html days, plus I have a bunch of content to move over which will make my site look kind of stupid unless I get everything updated.

Okay, we recently ported our announcement list over to Dreamhost and I am working through the automation they have. Right now, our "automated' sign up goes through the forms by Bravenet. Not only does this add work for me, but it puts users through needless hoops.

I get an email saying they want to sign up for the list, then I have to manually enter them into web panel for the announcement list. Then, they get an email asking them to go click on the confirmation button. While trying to sign up, they have to go through all the Bravenet junk.

My understanding is that there is a way to have them sign up directly. They enter their info into a form and Dreamhost automatically sends them a confirmation email. Unfortunately, I do not know how to set this up. My web skills are limited to Dreamweaver and I cannot seem to find any documentation on the procedure to do so.

If anyone can point me to some easy instructions, I would surely appreciate it. You can take a look at what we have at http://www.henrystonemusic.com/emaillist.htm, so you can kind of see what I am going for. Just a form that automatically notifies Dreamhost of a list signup so they can automatically send a confirmation email.

Thanks Much!

Yeah, if you create a new user it will *only* have access to the new subdomain (not 'everything'). Just share the user's info among those who require it - and like Scott suggests, choose whom you share the info with wisely.

You'll have to use SFTP (many FTP programs support this), but it's doable with some effort.

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Unix_Groups

And don't forget that you're responsible for whatever these users upload. Make sure they're trustworthy.

EDIT: Why not just create that subdomain as owned by a new user, then give everybody that username and password?

Hey everyone,

I'm a little slow with these things and spent hours trying to figure this one out. So please bear with me. Any help will be much appreciated.

Basically I created a subdomain which will act as a file sharing/transfer platform. How do I create multiple FTP users that's only limited to that particular subdomain? I tried creating a new User but that gives access to everything.

I sure hope you have passwords and full access to the Panel here. Right?

And if that person is a flake, change all passwords. Find someone else to help the next time around.

In the mean time, yes, post the URL so we can see what it might take to update your site.

Don't use upper case in a URL. Ever. Try making everything lower case, even the HTTP, and see if that works. This means you'll have to rename (or create symbolic links) directories, perhaps some files, and use all lower case when you email the link.

I have a number of video type files (mpg, wmv, etc) loaded under a folder within my fully hosted web site and wish to make them available for download. I thought that I could just include the URL to the file in an email and then clicking it would automatically start the download process. However, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page".
I know the link is correct, I grabbed it off of an IE display of the index for that directory.
The URL I use is like this:

The term "forum" is used approx. 4x more than "forums" - even tho forums is the correct term if you have more than one.. ermm.. forum at the landing site. The proper Internet word is actually 'Board' (remember the good old BBS circa arpanet?) where you would find one 'forum', or several 'forums' to click on and then post a thread.

Confused yet?

I usually use a domain.com/forum and have a forum.domain.com 301'ing to it as well.

The easiest way is to do a redirect. With a text editor create a file that has the following in it.

Redirect permanent /index.html http://www.example.com/blog/index.html

The above is assuming your files are html, just change extentions to what your files are.
Save this file to your computer at temp.htaccess
upload the file to your root directory(the folder same as your domain name)
Rename the file on the server to .htaccess
Windows does not allow file to start with a period which was the reason for the temp filename.
When uploading the file make sure the file is uploaded as a text or ascii and not binary as that may cause problems.
Also when saving the file on your computer make sure it is text only no formatting allowed or it will not work.
Since the file will be renamed on your server the filename on the computer doesn't really matter what it's named. So if the .txt is following it don't worry about just remember to remove it when you rename it on the server.

First post here, so please be gentle :-)

On my DreamHost account I originally set up an index.shtml page at the root to serve as my home page. But I recently set up WordPress in a subdirectory called /blog/ and I would like that directory and the WordPress install to serve as my home page.

I'm not sure if there is a setting in the DreamHost control panel that will allow me to make the /blog/ directory the home directory, or if I should use some type of .htaccess file to do that.

Alternatively, should I move all my WordPress files from the /blog/ directory up to the root? That seems risky to me.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks,
Bryan

Same with me. I use folders as well. I don't think I would worry too much about what way you go Lensman. I beleive most people that visit frequently would have your forum in their favorites menu. Everyone else well they should beable to access it from your main web page if they forget.

Whenever I'm typing /forum* as a directory after the root, I realize I can never remember which way the forum I'm visiting decides to spell it.

I'm not sure which one is the best one to use, but I would advocate using a 301 redirect to channel the common variations into the same landing page :) I have a site with a /forum directory and I'd have to actually go visit to say which spelling is the actual page since either one takes me there.

Hi all,

So I was starting up a new forum for my company and it occurred to me that there are at least three very common sub-domains used for discussion forums:
forum.example.tld
forums.example.tld
discussion.example.tld

I obviously want to pick the most conventional one so people don't have to think when typing the URL.

Opinions? I think forum is the most popular, but don't have proof of this.

Thanks!

If all they need is FTP access to that domain, then it's easy. Create a new User in Users -> Manage Users. Then create a new Fully Hosted Domain in Domains -> Manage Domains. *Don't* put their site folder in your own webspace because they'll need your access to get to it.

For databases, during creation, it'll ask you for the database user, database name, and database hostname. These are all independent of the FTP users. Fortunately, we're allowed "unlimited" users and domains, so it's easy to set up stuff for others. Just remember that it's *your* account and you're ultimately responsible for all content.

Hi
I've had a site hosted with DH for a few years but I want to make another site for someone else. I assume there is a way of doing this with out setting up a whole new DH account for them but I'm not sure how to do it. Is is simply a matter of putting their site in a folder in my webspace and setting up a domain to point to that? What if I wanted to set up something that required a database?

Thanks

Hi Sue,

Did you do the "Easy" one-click install?

At any rate, either way, you can edit the text you're talking about by going to "Administration Control Panel". You can get to it by either going to the link that appears at the bottom of the forum pages when you're logged in as the admin user, or by going to "forum.mydomain.com/adm".

From there you should be in the "General" tab.

From there click on "Board settings" in the left-nav.

The site name and description should be editable from there. Make sure to "submit" your changes. :)

Feeling like a dork.

I did the one-click install of phpbb and set up a forum as at a subdomain: forum.mydomain.com ... When I set it up I must have skipped over some text I was supposed to enter that shows up at the top of the page. No problem, I'll just edit the file ...

Problem. I have no idea where it is or how to find it. It doesn't show up in my manage domain section and it isn't noticeable anywhere when I open up my site: mydomain.com with the ftp software and hunt around in there.

I know that I have limited ability to do things with the one-click but ... does that mean I'm stuck with "A short text to describe your forum" in my header?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Sue

I am looking for a host for my non-profit organization's website. My most important requirement is to have the capabiliy for members to set up a user name and password for themselves that would give them access to the member directory. The administrator should be able to accept or deny any such application. This probably sounds pretty basic, but I am not in any way an expert at this. Does DreamHost offer something like this that would be easy for me to set-up?

Thanks!

The domain in question is one I just registered tonight. There's no danger of losing anything, but I didn't want to back myself into a corner and find that I had done something irreversible. I wasn't sure how Gmail handles transfers away from them (don't they do something weird when trying to close an account?) so I wanted to make sure there wasn't a policy in place preventing such a transfer. Similar to the inability to forward mail to AOL and Comcast that I read here.

The subdomain idea is very cool tho, in case I need it in the future for some reason.

Thank you for your help.

You can always change back. If you do, you may have a short period when your mail could go either place as DNS updates, and that could result in you "missing" some mail.

Have you considered instead of changing you existing domain setting to "try" Gmail just creating a new "something.dreamhosters.com" domain and setting it to use Gmail so you can see how you like it?

Hi,

I've browsed the forums and I think I know the answer to this question, but I want to be REALLY careful about this. I've only used Dreamhost's standard mail up to this point. I'd like to see what it would be like to use Gmail to manage my mail. However, if I don't like it I will of course want to switch back to Dreamhost's. I want to make absolutely sure I'll be able to do that.

Thank you, and happy birthday in advance.

According to my WMP its version 11, but I did not see the file types tab under the options. Im running Vista if that makes any difference.

Also I unchecked the boxes for Mp3s in QuickTime.
Now when I click a hosted MP3, it starts to stream in Quicktime, and when I click a hosted WMA it opens a download box. So basically I duplicated the same thing on my laptop as I did on our desktop machine haha. I dont know if that counts as progress or not.

Thank you so much for your help so far, but Im not out of the woods yet.

EDIT: Eeesh the plot thickens, just for kicks I tried using IE, I had been using Firefox. In IE the WMA files began streaming with WMP like they should, the MP3 files still opened the download box though. I tried changing the settings in Firefox to automatically open MP3s with WMP instead of QuickTime, but that didnt work.
What Im not liking is the fact that not everyone who visits the site will be using IE, so I need to get this working with both, and hopefully more or less automatically, because I dont like the thought of people having to edit so many settings just to listen.

For windows media player 11 right click the top of the window. Select tools, options, file types tab, check the mp3 box.
It may be necessary to uncheck mp3 in quicktime. If I recall next time you run quicktime it will ask if you want to reassociate the file extentions. If you choose yes then mp3 will belong to quicktime once again.
for file type in quicktime, select edt, preferences, quicktime preferences, file types tab, uncheck mp3. There is a + bebore the checkbox this allows you to specify just audio or playlist. If the parent box is empty then neither box is checked.

Hmmm. I'd swear I'd installed it with the one-click option (mainly because I don't think I'd have known how to do it manually).

But I guess that does seem like the most likely explanation.

So its really more of an issue on the settings of the user's media player, not anything else?

Does anyone know where those settings are in WMP? Thats what I typically use, and most computers have it installed by default. So I would like to fix the issue on my own machine, that way I can help out users who are having the same problem on my website.

When you go to https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=goodies.installer& -- there should be a third option for upgrading.

If there's not, I'm guessing you didn't install Wordpress with the one-click option? If you installed it manually, that's probably how you'll have to upgrade.

I prefer the manual upgrades anyway. It's easy to do and there are detailed instructions over at wordpress.org that walk you right through it.

I'm a novice with a WordPress blog hosted at Dreamhost. I'd like to upgrade to the new 2.6 version. Based on information I've seen elsewhere, it appears I should be able to do this with a one-click upgrade.

But when I go to the Goodies/One-Click Install control panel, I only have two options:

1) Install new website software - easy mode

2) Install new website software - advanced mode

Should there be an "Upgrade previously-installed software" option. If so, how do I get it?

Thanks for any help people can provide. The instructions for doing a manual install make my head hurt.

If I recall what program that is used to play the mp3 will depend on the user not the web site designer. Thats why it plays on windows media on your and quicktime on someone elses.
