I'm a bit confused on a couple of issues. You've been a customer for 5 years, yet this is the *first* time you've ever posted to the forums. You've not even posted asking for solutions for the email outage. Email being down for 24 hours can mean a number of things, either inbound or outbound, which you haven't clarified. Also, as a customer for 5 years, you should know that there's no need to submit "multiple" service requests in a 24 hour period, as that just clogs up the system.

I prefer to have separate web hosting and domain name registration. I have heard too many times about someone's site getting shut down for some reason and their domains held hostage. Not to say I would do anything to have my account terminated but you never know. I have a couple of domains hosted with DH but I use a separate host for the bulk of my domains.

I've been a customer almost 5 years. In the beginning, you could not beat the bang for the buck. Trouble tickets were answered quickly. Something has changed. Our email has been DOWN FOR OVER 24 HOURS! No response to multiple service requests. I think it is time to look for alternatives.

A quote from one of the service tags that sums up the current attitude.

"I think it is interesting that in the FAQ about moving from shell to a separate email service, they insult and belittle the customers that have been with them the longest. In my business, those are the ones we take care of.

It was not my choice to have mail in the shell account. That is how they did it when we joined. It was not my choice to have it screwed up by Dreamhost in the move to a separate server. I'm not an idiot for staying with shell email, the purpose of having a ISP is to not have to worry about the technology.

It would not have been that hard to address this long before the server crashed. All I would have needed was to backup the email directory in the shell before they tried to move it."

I don't see a reason why it is better to do them separately.

I personally prefer to manage everything at one spot

I used to register at GoDaddy, but like registration here better. The anonymous WHOIS service here is free. I believe that .com registration here is cheaper as well.

I'm wondering if most ppl buy their domain with AND host with DH. I've been told that it's better to do them separately.

Any opinions?

Hi

I found the my sites hosted by DreamHost are very slow and unstable. I sent request to CS for many times but every reply were not related and even nonsense.

Any guys also had such experience? Please give me some advise. I'm new to here and I don't wanted to give up my paid service charge and switch to another hosting company...

I don't think all of you guys have the same problem because my friend who also use dreamhost but his site up and running find (http://blog.hk). But my site (http://hkcollege.net) was unstable or even down for about 2 weeks...

Thanks and Regards.

I have been a customer since 2004. I have referred many people to Dreamhost over the years. I have been paying for a VPS for a few years now.

Sometime last week (around Nov 12th), all of my sites went down. I only noticed this because I tried to access one and was taken to an empty root directory.

I am missing literally 100s of GB of data. I have gone back and forth with Dreamhost customer support for the past 7 days in an effort. Despite them telling me it is being fixed, there has been virtually no progress made. ALL of my dreamhost-hosted domains are down (both business and personal).

I am absolutely beyond words to describe this experience and despite making repeated requests for someone to call me, have yet to speak with a new rep.

Has anyone else experienced this - ever - with ANY company? This is unbelievably insane to me.

You'll definitely need Support's help. First off, you can't move hosting over to an account that was created with a promo code. This prevents discount hopping.

I think they're also able to migrate a domain over to a different owner's hosting plan.

I'm a freelance web content manager and have a client who currently has his website hosted through an employee's personal DreamHost account.

He wants to split his website and everything that goes with it (hosting, domain, email, databases) off into his own account.

The employee has given me full admin privileges to his personal account, but I'm struggling to find a way to split the account without downloading my client's information to a local machine and then re-uploading it to a new account.

Since we're staying within DreamHost, I was hoping there would be an easy way to separate designated information from the original account to another without messing around with downloading and uploading content to a local machine.

I don't mind downloading and uploading the website and its associated database, but they have some decent sized email accounts that I prefer not to do this with.

The bottom line is that I want to create a new web and email hosting account for my client with as little downtime as possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First off, it's an e-commerce site. Going down that often is unacceptable and is absolutely a legitimate reason to "Bag" a hosting company. Second, The site has been moved and hasn't gone down for a single moment. Third, there are three of us running the atomsmokes.com site from different locations, an IT expert, a web developer and a graphic designer, if it were ISP related issues we would be able to tell.

Now, I was a dreamhost customer for many years (well over 5) and I remember when my sites hosted there never went down. I used to be very happy with them and recommended them to many of my clients. All the issues I've had with them have started over the last 6 months to a year. Perhaps something happened internally? That I can't say. But I can say their quality of customer care and uptime's have dipped dramatically.

We are just customers like you here.

We know that DH supports realplayer streaming and quicktime streaming.

hi i've been using DH for years now, and i just got your newsletter with the DreamHost PS (Private Servers) promo.

i'm thinking about upgrading but i wanted to know...
Would I be able to install Flash media Server 3-4 on it?

i'm streaming a good amount of video and i have to use another hosting company "Edgecast" for this service. I would rather have everything in one place ala Dreamhost.

thanks for your time.

That sounds like server or end-user trouble. Can't blame the Support guys

In reply to:

I was told by support that it could take 24 hours or even more to get a response (let alone a resolution?), plus my ticket has been moved out of the ticket system, making it impossible for me to get back to support (unless I file another ticket).

Support allow 24 hours "response time". Assuming the problem wasn't caused by the end-user themselves and is an actual DreamHost issue then the "resolution" is made (read: they fix the problem) before responding to the ticket. If it isn't fixed in 24 hours then we get an auto-response. Tickets are removed from the queue once a problem is resolved, which is sensible.

It is never impossible for account holders to get in touch with Support.

In reply to:

I never expected DH to isolate customer in such a way, but apparently they have joined the let's waste the customer's time tactics bandwagon.

I'm not entirely sure what you're on about there mate.

I wish I could say the same, but between the email problems last week that lasted for more than a day and all my sites being unresponsive for many hours now, I am not a happy camper.

I was told by support that it could take 24 hours or even more to get a response (let alone a resolution?), plus my ticket has been moved out of the ticket system, making it impossible for me to get back to support (unless I file another ticket).

I never expected DH to isolate customer in such a way, but apparently they have joined the let's waste the customer's time tactics bandwagon.

Is it ok to set up list and invite my more than 1000 yahoogroups members ?

Will it be considered spamming ? They actually have to opt-in, that's why I reinvite them to join.
